Minutes May 24, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 8:00 pm. A salute to the flag and a moment of silence was observed.

April 26 Minutes: Were read.  There was one correction in which a tournament had been mentioned as the Redmens but was actually Eagleswood fire company. The minutes were then accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:   The report was accepted and approved.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund: Although Ed Goldman was not at the meeting, Joe stated that Ed said the Atlantic Cancer fund will be meeting next month.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  No report.

Communications:  No report.

Marine Fisheries:  No report.

Tournaments: We will hold our first tournament this Saturday the 29th.  The weigh in will be at JW restaurant on Faunce Landing road.  There will be a change in weigh in times from 2 to 3 instead of 2 to 4. 

Sunshine:  Lou reported that Jack Hermann has healed from his first incision and is able to get around.  Lou reported that Dave Burke, who was absent tonight, has had a bad eye infection is recovering from that.

Membership: No new member applications.

Old Business:  Joe Ricciardi reported on the dredging of Absecon bay.  The pipes are laid out at Conkleys (?) and the dredging will start in June.  Joe also said the dredgers may dredge out some high spots in Absecon creek

New Business:  Ed Goldman is a member of the RFA and he and other delegates went to visit the division of fish and game to discuss the current fluke regulations.

Good of the Order:  Chris Peska is the first entry for stripers weighing 12.3lb. and 31 inches. Also, John Reese and Bill Will were cooks for Egg Harbor Post 158 breakfast this past Saturday and served about 140 people. Everyone had a chance to report on opening day of flounder season and how they did catch wise.

Minutes May 10, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Dave Burke at 8:00 pm. A salute to the flag and a moment of silence was observed.  

April 26 Minutes: Approved as read. 

Treasurer’s Report: The report was approved. 

Board Meeting: Did not meet.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  Next meeting May 13. 

Communications:  Bank statements.

Marine Fisheries: They will meet virtually on May 13. 

Tournaments:  There was discussion about the perch tournament.  There were only 12 people interested in fishing it so the tournament was scrubbed for this year.   Further discussion about our second club tournament scheduled for June 12.  There are 2 other tournaments that day, the Pomona Gun Club and the Atlantic County Game Preserve.  It was felt, in a general discussion, to change our second club tournament to June 26, the date we had considered for our open tournament.   Everyone agreed to that.   There was discussion about the Sneaky Hollow perch tournament.  Despite the cold and windy weather, many people fished and it was considered a success.  Dave Rosch also mentioned that the Redmen had a perch tournament north of here from Tuckerton to Toms River.

Sunshine:  Lou Schott keeps in touch with Jack Hermann.  He is waiting for test results before his operation is rescheduled.  He is at home recuperating

Membership: No new member applications.

Old Business:   Joe Ricciardi was not present but gave a written report.  One, that Absecon Bay dredging is scheduled for May 24.  The state replaced some stakes in the creek and just past the mouth of the creek. No new stakes have been replaced out in Absecon Bay as of now, the state may not mark the channel due to dredge work.  Two, Joe has all the club plaques that were displayed in the legion that were taken down during the legion remodeling.  Three, the A.C. railroad bridge needs 4 hours’ notice to open for boats. It takes a long time to open the bridge due to a bad gear. Should be fixed in a few weeks.

New Business:  None

Good of the Order:  Egg Harbor Post 158 will be having a breakfast on Saturday, May 22.  The cost is $7.00.  Bill Will and John Reese will be cooking. The N.J. Marine Digest is available online. Surf clams, it is reported, are hard to find.

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 8:05 pm in the downstairs of the American Legion.  Dave Burke took notes for the minutes.    A salute to the flag was made.  Eight members were present including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Joe Ricciardi, Bill Will, Rich Oeser and Ed Goldman.  Attendees wore masks and sat at least 6 feet apart. Note:  most members present had received one or both doses of the Covid 19 vaccine.  

April 12 Minutes: Approved as e-mailed. 

Treasurer’s Report:   Bill Will made the motion to approve the report.  The motion was approved. 

Board Meeting: Did not meet.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  Next meeting May 13. 

Communications:  None. A problem was reported adding people to our Facebook site. 

Marine Fisheries: Fluke season will begin on May 22.  Dave Burke said that bonus striper tags were mailed to applicants.  Ed Goldman noted that there are vacancies on the Marine Fisheries Council.

Tournaments:  It is unlikely that the Nuncio Bruno Kid’s Bluefish Tournament will be held this year.  The Sneaky Hollow Sportsmen will hold their annual perch tournament on May 1. The club will have a perch tournament on May 15 and its’ first regular tournament on May 29. Pomona Gunning Club will hold its’ annual fluke tournament on June 12.  Atlantic County Game Preserve will hold a fishing tournament on June 12.  The club’s second tournament will also be on June 12.

The Landisville Gunning Club had its’ perch tournament on 4/17; there were 300 competitors.  The winners took $2500 in prize money.

Sunshine:  Jack Herman is at home and feeling better according to Lou Schott. 

Membership: No new member applications.  Charle Elwell reported that we have 54 paid members.

Old Business:   Dredging of Absecon Creek will begin possibly by the end of May.      

New Business:  The Scott’s Landing boat ramp is closed for repairs and upgrades.    Ed Goldman mentioned that the Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund will hold a craft fair on Pitney Road and that they thanked the club for the recent donation.

Good of the Order:  Lou Schott mentioned the Youth Pheasant Shoot had been a success in the past but was being jeopardized by too many new State rules.  Ed Goldman mentioned that the RFA needs to raise money to support its’ lobbying/recreational fishing efforts.  Ed is the acting president of the NJ Chapter of RFA.   

Adjournment:  Motion made at 8:33 pm.  Motion approved. 

Next Meeting: May 10 at 8:00 pm.  Meeting will be held in the downstairs, bar area of the Legion.
