Meeting Notes:  10-11-2021

Joe Ricciardi called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.  A flag salute and moment of silence was observed.  Ten members were in attendance.

Minutes: The September 20 minutes were read and accepted. 

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund:  No report. 

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs: Meeting will be October 14. 

Communications: A bank statement was received.  Charlette Brown (widow of Spence) said she enjoys getting club information.  There was discussion on the club website and Facebook. 

Marine Fisheries: No report.

Tournaments:  No tournaments until next year.  The fishing derbies continue for stripers, blue fish and perch.  A striper entry was received. The fish weighed 8.2 pounds. 

Sunshine:  Harry Walker is home.   

Membership: No new applications. 

Old Business: Joe Ricciardi reported that the channel dredging was continuing and that channel markers were placed to the dredge location. He said that he went through the area ok.  Dredging is expected to continue until waters freeze.  Joe indicated that Ed Goldman and the RFA expedited the channel marking. 

New Business: The club voted to begin all future meetings at 7:30 p.m.  It is anticipated that there will be snacks at the December 13 meeting. The desert plaque was updated to reflect the 2021 winner.

Nominations:  No change in current officers.  Dave Burke indicated he would like to step down but would remain if no one else wanted the position.   

Good of the Order:  Charlie Elwell reported that he had good sea bass fishing on the opening day.  Crabbing has been good.  John Reese reported that he had a good day perch fishing including catching a 14.5 incher.  Dave Roesch reported that there was excellent striper fishing in the Mullica River.  Lou Schott reported that the NJOA shoot at Red Wings Sporting Clays was a big success.  More than 100 people signed up to shoot.  John Reese encouraged members to support the Egg Harbor City Legion breakfast on the coming weekend.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund:  No report.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club:  Dave Burke reported about the Tech Center regarding deer hunting on the property.  He also brought up that the NJOA would be having a fund raiser shoot at Red Wing on October 9.  Besides the shoot there are raffles and 50/50.

Communications:    No report.

Marine Fisheries:     Had a meeting last week.

Tournaments:           No report.

Sunshine:                   No report of anyone sick.

Membership:            No new applications.

Old Business:           Joe Ricciardi reported about the dredging, Joe sent an email to coastal engineering to request buoys or stakes be placed where it had been dredged.  It is still extremely difficult to navigate the channel.

New Business:           No report.

Website and Facebook: Lou read the email he received from Bob Cusack regarding the cost of the website.  We are currently paying $179.88 per year.  Joe indicated he would check on pricing the cost of the website since he does not pay that much for his store. The bill for our website is not due until April 2022.

Minutes: The minutes of the August 23 meeting were read and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:  

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund:  Meeting next week.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club:  Meeting in September.

Communications:    No report.

Marine Fisheries:     Had a meeting last week.

Tournaments:           Done, except for annual tournaments for Fluke, Bluefish, Perch, and Striper.

Sunshine:                   No report of anyone sick.

Membership:            No new applications.

Old Business:           Regarding dredging, lots of low spots around dredging. Joe measured 3 ft. at high tide.

New Business:           No report.

Picnic:                        88 total attendees, many first timers.  Leftover food count: 2 containers of potato salad, ½ tube of hamburgers, 3 packs of hot dogs and rolls, 6 cans of beer, 2 bottles of water, and about 100 clams; (no crabs, corn, or perch leftover).  The 50/50 split was $215.  Lou’s daughter, Anne, won the 50/50 and donated it back to the Club.  Gross collected was $2,110 and profit was $985.  Will give a couple hundred to the firehouse.  Dessert winners: 1st Sue Ricciardi; 2nd Robin Gross, 3rd Nancy Reese.  Next year will get ¼ keg of beer instead of cans.

Website and Facebook: Picnic flyer was posted.

Good of the Order:        Jim Donofrio will step down as Executive Director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), effective December, 2021.   

Next Meeting will be September 27th at 8:00 PM at the Absecon American Legion Hall.

Tournaments: Done except for annual tournaments.

Sunshine: John Reese is OK, Lou Schott is OK. Jack Hermann has cancer.

Membership: Charlie to send updated membership list to Bob.

Joe Ricciardi called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm.  After the flag salute, a moment of silence was observed for deceased members & first responders.

Minutes: The minutes of the July 23 meeting were read and accepted with 2 corrections.  The picnic setup is September 11 not the 8th. In addition, heaviest flounder was 3.86 not 3.79.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund:  No report.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club: Meeting in September.

Communications:        No report.

Marine Fisheries:        No report.

Tournaments: The existing striper and perch tournaments are still going on so make sure you get some documentation as a weigh in slip. The Sunshine foundation will have their tournament on August 29. Here are the results of the 4th in-house tournament.

Weakfish:  

1st First Place & heaviest:  Dave Roesch  3.23 lbs.

2nd Place:   None

Bluefish:  

1st Place           Joe Engleman  1.45 lbs.

2nd Place and heaviest:  Rich Oeser 1.01 lbs.

3rd Place           Bill Will 0.77 lbs.

Flounder:  

1st Place           Bill Will 7.31 lbs.

2nd Place:          Dave Burke 4.88 lbs.

3rd Place           Jeff Reese 4.65 lbs.

Heaviest:          Bob Rode 4.4 lbs.

Sunshine: John Reese broke his ribs on the day before the last in-house tournament and still fished the tournament.

Tournaments: the final tournament is Saturday, Aug. 7.  Weigh in will start at 2 30 pm.  That time worked out well for everyone. The existing tournaments are still going on so make sure you get some documentation as a weigh in slip.

Picnic: Lou has all the supplies kindly handed to him by Joe Ricciardi.  Lou did an inventory of the supplies.  Bill will and lou both mentioned that we will need volunteers to help for the picnic.  The evening before we will need helpers to clean the benches at the cologne firehouse.  That would be Saturday Sept 8.

Good of the Order: Prayers for John Reese who was in the hospital for a heart procedure. And Lou mentioned the passing of Dave Showells mother, Marjorie Showell.  Dave has been a longtime member and supporter of the club in so many ways. Our deepest sympathy to Dave and family

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

Minutes June 14, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 8:00 pm. A salute to the flag and a moment of silence was observed.

May 24 Minutes: Were read online and approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report:   The report was accepted as read.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund: They will meet, in person, for the first time since the pandemic started on June 16. 

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  No report.

Communications:  Bank statement.

Marine Fisheries:  No report.

Tournaments: The first tournament was held on Saturday June 5 under tough conditions.  Winners are as follows:  Fluke: 3 fish heaviest weight, Jeff Reese at 8.10 pounds, second place Charlie Elwell at 7.25.  Third place Dave Burke at 5.47 lb.  There was a tie for single heaviest fish between Jeff Reese and Bill Will at 3.25 lb. Weakfish:  Only one weighed in at 1.36 by Bill Will.  Bluefish:  first place: Dave Burke at 4.79k, second place Bill Will at 4.42. Joe Engelman took third place and heaviest bluefish at 2.40 lb. Our striper and perch derbies are ongoing. 

Sunshine:  No one reported sick.

Membership: No new member applications.

Old Business: Joe Ricciardi reported that the dredging of Absecon Bay will continue through November.  The dredge pipe they are using is very small.  Joe estimated at about 12 inches diameter.

New Business:   Lou Schott reported that the picnic will again be held.  Dave Holmes reported that Brian Smallwood will again be our musical entertainment.

Good of the Order:  Dave Burke announced and had handouts for the friends of NRA dinner to be held on June 24 at Masso’s in Glassboro.  The cost is $60.00.  Rich Oeser reported that the Pomona Gun Club held their annual fluke tournament on June 12. It was a big success with the winner having a total weight of 11.66 pounds and single heaviest fish was 4.60 pounds.  The Atlantic County Game Preserve held their first fishing tournament, also on June 12.  It was a big success with good food, raffles, and Chinese auction the heaviest single fluke was 5.40 pounds.

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 8:00 pm. A salute to the flag and a moment of silence was observed.

April 26 Minutes: Were read.  There was one correction in which a tournament had been mentioned as the Redmens but was actually Eagleswood fire company. The minutes were then accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:   The report was accepted and approved.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund: Although Ed Goldman was not at the meeting, Joe stated that Ed said the Atlantic Cancer fund will be meeting next month.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  No report.

Communications:  No report.

Marine Fisheries:  No report.

Tournaments: We will hold our first tournament this Saturday the 29th.  The weigh in will be at JW restaurant on Faunce Landing road.  There will be a change in weigh in times from 2 to 3 instead of 2 to 4. 

Sunshine:  Lou reported that Jack Hermann has healed from his first incision and is able to get around.  Lou reported that Dave Burke, who was absent tonight, has had a bad eye infection is recovering from that.

Membership: No new member applications.

Old Business:  Joe Ricciardi reported on the dredging of Absecon bay.  The pipes are laid out at Conkleys (?) and the dredging will start in June.  Joe also said the dredgers may dredge out some high spots in Absecon creek

New Business:  Ed Goldman is a member of the RFA and he and other delegates went to visit the division of fish and game to discuss the current fluke regulations.

Good of the Order:  Chris Peska is the first entry for stripers weighing 12.3lb. and 31 inches. Also, John Reese and Bill Will were cooks for Egg Harbor Post 158 breakfast this past Saturday and served about 140 people. Everyone had a chance to report on opening day of flounder season and how they did catch wise.
