ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

April 8, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a pledge to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      No report.

GACF:                                                Ed Goldman reported that they are still considering running some type of

fishing tournament.      

TOURNAMENTS:                            The flyer and application (now on a single page) for the Kids’ Bluefish tournament are ready and can be distributed.  Dave Burke has written press releases for the Fisherman, The Patriot, The Current, and the NJ Federation newspaper; some still waiting to be approved for publication.  

SUNSHINE:                                       Lou Schott attended Carey Shreaves’ viewing and dropped off a card.

FEDERATION:                                 Next meeting April 9.      

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                Mid-Atlantic Council meets next week.                                     

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  No report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Received insurance bill and bank statement.  Bob Cusack submitted                                                                   a receipt for renewing the website hosting service. 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               Joe Ricciardi needs volunteers to man the booth at the Absecon Sportsman Show on May 5th.  Lou Schott suggested an aquarium containing eels for a good topic of discussion.   Rich Oeser has raffle tickets available.  

NEW BUSINESS:                              The Atlantic County Federation gave a us a $300 donation.  Jim Van Daley brought up T-shirt adds for the open tournament; we should get commitments now so shirts can be ordered.           

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 Bill Will mentioned that the Cologne Fire House will have their annual Chicken Barbeque on June 1.  Jim Van Daley mentioned that Oceanville Fire Company will have their Ham and Oyster Dinner on April 13.

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

March 11, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the February 11 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      The Trustees meeting was held at Jim Van Daley’s house on March 4th. The budget was set for 2019.

GACF:                                                Considering a fishing derby of some sort.

TOURNAMENTS:                            Open tournament flyers (with the new $1000 bonus drawing) and the Ann & Nuncio Bruno Kids Bluefish Tournament Flyers have been printed, are available and will be posted on the website for the purpose of pumping up interest. The push is on to get at least 65 boats entered in this year’s open tournament.

SUNSHINE:                                       Cearey Shreaves (Scott’s father) passed away. Lou Schott will be asked to send a card.

FEDERATION:                                 Annual dinner attendance was down, but the 50/50 drawing was still up and the food was the best yet.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                There was a joint meeting of the ASMFC and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council Summer Flounder Boards in Virginia Beach. Commercial fishermen were granted a 40% increase in their quota, anglers were not granted any increase.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  Volunteers are need for the Kid’s Bluefish Tournament and for Patriot Lake.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  Nothing new to report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Received bank statement.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               Tickets for the Pay Day for Labor Day Raffle have been printed and are available for distribution. New club memberships will be offered at the Absecon Sportsman Show for $25.00 for the year.

NEW BUSINESS:                              No new business.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 New Facebook group members will be encouraged to join the club.

February 11, 2019 Minutes

February 11, 2019

Vice President Lou Schott brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  President Jim Van Daley was attending an alternate meeting.   The previous meeting’s minutes were not available but approved as read online.   The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.  Account balances: Raffle-$5.56; General-$1505.97; Charity-$1,793.30.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      No report.

GACF:                                                No report.

TOURNAMENTS:                            Joe Ricciardi created a calendar with tournaments, meetings, and events.

SUNSHINE:                                       No report.

FEDERATION:                                  The dinner will be held on February 18at the Greek Orthodox Church, EHT. 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  Many non-members have indicated that they would like to be able to

participate in our Facebook site.  We felt it would be a good idea.            

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Received bank statement and license from the state to allow the raffle.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               Lou Schott reported on the installation dinner.  It was again held at the

Crab Trap with 44 in attendance, and everyone was very pleased.  It had been snowing all day, so some people

missed it.  The cost of the dinner, appetizers, gratuity, door prizes, and trophies was almost break even.  Brian

Will was named “Fisherman of the Year,” and John Reese was named “Outstanding Member for the Year.” 

NEW BUSINESS:                               Raffle tickets have been printed and are available.  The city of Absecon is

hosting an outdoor sportsman show at Pitney Field on Saturday, May 4th.  We will be setting up a booth from

9AM-4PM and need volunteers – contact Joe Ricciardi.  There will be food vendors, boat dealers, Bass Pro and

others.  The Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen will be donating $100 to the show.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 Dave Showell started a new Facebook page entitled “fish a/c.”  Anyone

can access it to share their personal fishing experiences.  There is another group of anglers similar to ours called

“a.c. saltwater anglers.”   President Van Daley arrived late and stated that he would like to see if Ace Hardware

would put us on their Facebook site, particularly if we add their name to our Open Tournament flyer.

January 14, 2019 Minutes

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

January 14, 2019

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes from December 10 were approved as posted except that the acting secretary had reversed the closing balances on the charity and general accounts.   The Treasurer report was read and approved. 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                          Will have meeting in February.          

GACF:                                     They will not be involved in the Atlantic City Boat Show this year.

TOURNAMENTS:                No report.

SUNSHINE:                            Lou Schott gave report that Bob Cusack had an operation; it was successful and he is

recuperating well.  Lou sent him a get well card.

FEDERATION:                      There will be a HOFNOD (“Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs”) training session in

Waretown soon for any one interested.  The annual fundraiser dinner will be held again on President’s Day, February

18th.  Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  No report.          

COMMUNICATIONS:                     A request was received from the Hiram Dewey Masonic lodge that they will

be having a fundraiser to help dyslexic children and they requested a donation.  A motion was approved to donate

$50.00 for an ad.   The Masonic Lodge will also sponsor a fundraiser to be held at Red Wing Sporting Clays on

April 13.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               President Van Daley made changes to the open tournament flyer.  Changes

will be made to the kid’s bluefish flyer and then they can be printed.  He also further discussed an additional prize

of $500 for the single largest fish in each of the 3 categories.  Joe Ricciardi discussed the Absecon Sportsmen Show

to be held on Saturday, May 4.  Cost to club will be $20.00 to exhibit there. 

NEW BUSINESS:                              Joe Ricciardi will get the calendar started.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:     John Reese mentioned that his nephew, who is wheelchair bound, shot a spike buck from his wheelchair during deer season.   It was also noted that Bill Butterhoff, long time owner of Butterhoff farm supply, passed away recently.

GACF:                                               The bingo fund raiser lost money.  The Chinese auction made ~$9000.00. 

TOURNAMENTS:                            There is only one striper entry and one perch entry.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:             President Van Daley wants to make changes to the open tournament flyer.  One change is to put our nonprofit number on the app which will allow participants to deduct the entry fee as a donation.  He also opened discussion about an additional prize category for the largest fish in each of the 3 species.  Giving out more prize money would possibly draw more boats into the tournament.  He also wants to make changes to the kids’ bluefish tournament application so that there is one sheet of paper using both sides of the paper for the flyer and application.   He also discussed and would like to change the effective date on the raffle tickets.  

NEW BUSINESS:                             None.

NOMINATIONS:                             There were no further entries for the officer positions so the nominations were closed.  Therefore, the officers remain:  President: Jim Van Daley; Vice President:  Lou Schott; Treasurer: Charles Elwell; Secretary: Bob Cusack; Trustees: John Reese, Dave Burke, Bob Zussman, Joe Ricciardi, and Rich Oeser.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:               It was noted that Joe Ricciardi brought in homemade chili and rolls as a treat for all those present.  Thank you, Joe.

November 12, 2018 Minutes

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN
MINUTES
November 12, 2018

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. Only 5 members were present. The minutes from October 8 were approved as posted. The Treasurer was not present and there was no report or update.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.
GACF: No report.
TOURNAMENTS: No report.

SUNSHINE: Ed Goldman had a knee replacement and is doing well. He is taking physical
therapy. After recovery, he is having his other knee replaced. Pete Rapetti is recovering from artery surgery and
said he is at about “60%”.

FEDERATION: The meeting was held on November 8 (second Thursday of month). Only 7
people attended. The Federation asked for contact information regarding a donation requested by Jim Van Daley at the October meeting. A recent NJOA sporting clay event at Red Wing generated $9,600. Many volunteers at Forsythe NWR have quit due a conflict with the new staff volunteer coordinator. Some programs such as youth archery training have been terminated. The deer seasons are going well. Pheasant season opened on November 10.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Thank you letters were sent to people who donated prizes for the Open
Tournament. Several letters were returned due to address problems. The letters will be hand delivered.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Charlie Elwell will contact the State to set up the raffle license.

NEW BUSINESS: President Van Daley was advised that there will be an Outdoor and
Sportsman’s event at the Pitney Athletic Field on May 4. The Absecon Community Affairs Office is setting up the
event. Proceeds will benefit the South Jersey Skills Lab. More information will be available at a later date.

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of September 10 were read and approved.   The treasurer’s report was also approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

GACF:                                                              No report.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                        There was a discussion that there may be other people in the boat fishing, but only club members’ fish are eligible for entry into the in-house Striper or Perch contests.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Lou Schott reported that Pete Rapetti has improved since his carotid artery surgery.  He is getting out and about.

 

FEDERATION:                                              Dave Burke gave a report that the Atlantic County Federation, after an audit, and after profits made from the annual venison dinner that the federation will be increasing its donations to local various causes.  He also stated that the state federation is suing the state of New Jersey regarding Governor Murphy’s executive order to close all state lands to bear hunting.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           No report.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             Joe Ricciardi discussed our Facebook page and that he and Dave Holmes are attempting to open it up so that more of the public can view it.

NEW BUSINESS:                                           John Glassey stated that our flag that flies in the Field of Dreams is worn out due to the weather and that they will pay to have it replaced.  President Van Daley also wanted to show the Field of Dreams on our open tournament banners in larger print.

 

PICNIC:                                                           Lou Schott reported that he was able to return some unopened food to Sam’s Club and received a credit for $101.  He will give the club a check at the next meeting.  This will help our breakeven point.  Also, Bobby Wilson took back one bag of 400 clams and will give us credit next year.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Some fish stories: Lou Schott went fishing with a friend last week and they kept about a dozen perch.  John Reese went perch fishing and they kept about 145!  Saturday the 22nd was the last day of fluke season.  Lou Schott fished AC Inlet.  They had 9 flounders but all shorts.  Chas Elwell went out into the rough ocean the same day and caught no fish.

2018 Picnic 1st Prize dessert contest recipe

 

Strawberry torte by Heidi Tort

 

Ingredients for cake

3 eggs

1 c sugar

4 tlbs cold water

 

1 c flour

1 tlbs potato or corn starch

1.5 tsp baking powder

 

1-2 mashed bananas

1.5 c of vanilla pudding

3 c Strawberries, divided

1/3 c sugar

1 pint heavy cream

 

Mix eggs sugar and water in mixer for 5-10 min then stir in flour, starch and baking powder until blended. Grease 9” round baking pan add batter and bake at 350F for 35-40 min While cake’s in the oven prepare toppings: mash bananas, prepare vanilla pudding, in blender mix 1c of strawberries w 1/3 c of sugar, whip heavy cream and desired sugar until pretty firm

 

After cake cools, cut cake in 3 layers

Spread bananas on first layer, add vanilla pudding on top of bananas. On second layer strawberry/sugar mix. Top cake w whip cream and decorate with sliced strawberries. Enjoy!

 

Store in fridge.

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of August 27 were read and approved with one minor change.  “Good of the Order” and the next meeting date were wrong.   The treasurer’s report was also approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                        No report.

 

GACF:                                                 No report.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                              Perch and Striper are ongoing.

 

SUNSHINE:                                        Lou reported that Pete Rapetti is recovering but is still weak.

 

FEDERATION:                                   No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                   There will be a meeting on Cobia.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                     No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Need to post recent “Day on the Bay” and annual picnic photos.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Received bank statements.  Tickets received for boat show at Lakewood.

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                  There is a discrepancy with the money collected for the raffle.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                Jim suggested that the FOD be added to the Open tournament signs but it was pointed out that the signs are already very busy and hard to read from passing cars.  Jim is going to check into selling raffle tickets at the National Night Out events next year. JD’s told Jim that they would be willing to hold the Open tournament BBQ for $11/head and it would include beer and soda.

 

PICNIC:                                              Lou reported that the picnic was break even at best.  Given the weather, it was still a good time with over 50 people in attendance. The extra food will be donated to the food bank and he will try to return unopened food to SAMs. Agreed to donate $200 to the firehouse. We will advertise that it will be BYOB next year. The dessert contest winners are; 1st – Heidi Tort, 2nd– Christine Jespersen, 3rd– Carol Fries.
