MINUTES

February 10, 2020

Dave Burke opened the meeting with a salute and moment of silence. Since all minutes were emailed they were not read but there were some errors in the minutes that got corrected. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        At the meeting held prior to the regular meeting, Joe Ricciardi gave a report of the latest

events. Joe had made a calendar of tournaments and other events.  However, we had to change the Kids’ Bluefish Tournament

from May 23 to May 16.  Our club will have it’s first bluefish tournament on the 23rd, which happens to be Memorial Day

weekend. Also, discussion about the open tournament in which the entry fee will be $75 per boat.  The cost will include a

barbeque at JW restaurant on Faunce Landing Road.

GACF:                                                 No report.

TOURNAMENTS:                              The open tournament has been moved to June 27.  Our tournaments will no longer

include weakfish entries.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  The Atlantic County Federation Annual Venison Dinner held on February 17, tickets

$40 at the door.  The Federation will hold its annual youth shoot at Red wing Sporting Clays; no date was mentioned.  Regarding

the annual dinner, John Zarych will pay for the shotgun, which will be auctioned off at the dinner.  He is also paying for the cost

of printing the tickets for the dinner.  At the dinner they will also have a better sound system for the evening.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                  No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                    Joe Ricciardi and Lou Schott attended the first HOFNOD meeting of the year at

Forsythe refuge. Our club has always been involved in this.  Some of our members will be needed to run a table and display regarding AFE handling and conservation of fish. We also need to help kids record their fish and help bait fishing poles, etc.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Dave Holmes stated that the website has not been updated since 2018.

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Post Office box bill, request for donation from RFA.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:              A previous member, Dave Roesch, rejoined the club. We also welcome new members Bob Fenton and Scott Van Daley.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                 Lou Schott gave a report on the awards/installation dinner.  57 people in attendance. A

plaque and gift certificate were presented to outgoing president Jim Van Daley. Also, a lifetime membership certificate was

presented to him and to past president Jim Sykes.  Awards were as follows: Bluefish: heaviest Dave Burke, 1st place Brian

Will.  Weakfish: heaviest Dave Williams, 1st place Dave Williams, second Jeff Reese, third Brian Will.  Flounder:  heaviest

Ernie Kinsell, first place was a tie with Ernie Kinsell and Charlie Elwell.   Striper:  there were no weigh ins.   Perch:  Jeff

Reese.  Lou mentioned that next year’s dinner will start at 6 pm instead of 7, since the meal was not served until very late.   

NEW BUSINESS:                                Joe Ricciardi mentioned the boat show is coming up the end of this month.  Ed

Goldman mentioned the Absecon Creek fest will take place again this fall, and also that mayor Kim Dalton of Absecon is

working on trying to get dredging done on Absecon Bay.

January 13, 2020 Meeting

January 13, 2020

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the December 9, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        A brief meeting was held before the regular meeting.  Tournaments, the annual

schedule, budget, membership and other matters were touched on.  A meeting was scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on January 27 at

Seafarer Shop LTD.  Any member with suggestions for the coming year should contact a club officer including Lou Schott,

Dave Burke or Joe Ricciardi.

GACF:                                                 Ed Goldman reported that $11,222 was earned at the Chinese auction.  John Schwartz

resigned as auction chairman since he is moving to Florida.  The new chairman will be Ron Peterson. It was mentioned that

Carol Fries, a longtime volunteer with the GACF, will be moving to Virginia.  President Van Daley said she will be missed.   

TOURNAMENTS:                              A letter was received from the Sunshine Foundation indicating a change in leadership

and that the tournament date for this year will be July 11, 2020.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  The annual venison dinner will be held on Monday, February 17 (President’s Day) at

Holy Trinity Greek Church, EHT.  Donation is $35 or $40 after February 13.  Call 609-927-3857 for tickets.  This is a great

dinner and the main fund raiser for the Federation.        

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                  No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                    Jim Van Daley will no longer be involved with the organization or annual tournament. 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Joe Ricciardi indicated that the two Facebook pages may be combined.

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Bank statement received.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:              No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                 Lou Schott is taking reservations and accepting money for the Installation Dinner. 

Contact Lou ASAP with your reservation and dinner selection (609-742-2382).  The dinner will again be held at the Crab Trap

in Somers Point, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31.  See the dinner announcement for details.  This is a great event

and we will be honoring past president Jim Van Daley.

NEW BUSINESS:                                A suggestion was made to follow the Absecon City affairs more closely.  Council

meetings are televised.

GACF:                                               Ed Goldman reported that $11,222 was earned at the Chinese auction.  John Schwartz resigned as auction chairman since he is moving to Florida.  The new chairman will be Ron Peterson. It was mentioned that Carol Fries, a longtime volunteer with the GACF, will be moving to Virginia.  President Van Daley said that she will be missed.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:           Lou Schott opened up discussion for the menu choices at the awards/ installation dinner.  The flyer and the choices will be posted soon.

NEW BUSINESS:                           President Van Daley handed over the keys to the Legion to Lou Schott since this was the last meeting Jim will be president.  It was stated that all bills are paid up to date.  New forms have to be signed for new signatures on the checking account.  In closing, President Jim Van Daley wished the best for the club in the new year and beyond.

November 11, 2019 Meeting

November 11, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the October 14, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:          

TRUSTEES:                                     No trustee meeting.

GACF:                                               Ed Goldman reported that the Chinese auction did very well profiting about

$11,000 and the place was packed.  The GACF is still working on some kind of fish derby for 2020.

TOURNAMENTS:                          There is only one perch entry at this point.

SUNSHINE:                                     No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                               Dave Burke reported that the computerized system to obtain a license is

now available through the division of fish and wildlife.  We, the Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen agreed to

give $100 to the federation to use for the youth shoot at Red Wing on March 14, 2020.  Also, Butch

Conover needs venison for the annual venison dinner held in February.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:            Joe Ricciardi attended the meeting at the Galloway library. It is not

written in stone yet but it appears that the new striper regs may only allow one striper between 28 and

35 inches.  And also, in 2021, circle hooks will be mandatory when fishing for stripers with live bait.

HOOKED ON FISHING:              No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:              The new bylaws are on the website.  And Rob Goldberg, a boat

mechanic working out of Dave Showell’s place has posted on our Facebook page.

COMMUNICATIONS:                  Bank statement and a thank you from HOFNOD for our participation at

Patriot Lake earlier in the year. 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:       No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:           Lou Schott reported that our installation /awards dinner would again

be held at the Crab Trap on January 31, 2020.

NEW BUSINESS:                           Nothing to report.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:             Joe Ricciardi asked everyone to bring some kind of food to the December

meeting to enjoy after the meeting.

October 14, 2019 Meeting

October 14, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the September 23, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        Lou Schott opened up the discussion regarding the changes in the bylaws.  The

changes were discussed but President Van Daley mentioned that there has to be a change in article x regarding

dissolution.  Since we are a 501c3 any assets must be given to any organization provided it is a 501c3.  With that change,

a motion was made to pass the changes in the bylaws and it passed unanimously except for one nay from President Van

Daley since he was still hoping for a President to run the club.  At that point, nominations were opened from the floor.

Charlie Elwell nominated Joe Ricciardi, Dave Burke nominated Lou Schott, John Reese nominated Dave Burke. Charlie

Elwell was nominated for Treasurer, Bob Cusack was nominated for Secretary, John Reese was nominated for Sargent at

Arms.  Recording Secretary—no nominations. 

GACF:                                                 The meeting will be held on September 23.

TOURNAMENTS:                              There is only one perch entry at this point.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  Dave Burke reported that, so far, the bow season for deer has been very good

with over 8,000 deer killed to date.  The state fish and wildlife is installing new a new computer system so the system will

be unavailable to use until Thursday September 17.  The federation also discussed the NJOA fund raiser clay bird shoot at

Red Wing on October 7.  They made a profit of over $10,000.  The NJ. bear season is starting and Governor Murphy has

still excluded all state lands from bear hunting.  Also, the division of fish and wildlife is now hiring additional (5)

conservation officers along with other staff people.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     No report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                        No report.

NEW BUSINESS:                                Lou Schott brought up an email he received from bob cusack regarding sending

out thank yours and photos of the Day on the Bay event.  It was decided to hold them until applications for the 2020 open

tournament are sent out and then include them.  The Atlantic County Federation requested a $100 donation from us for the

youth shoot to be held at Red Wing on March 14.  It was decided to hold off on that request until the new board convenes

in January and sets a budget.

September 23, 2019 Meeting

September 23, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President Lou Schott, President Jim Van Daley was not present, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the September 9, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:     

TRUSTEES:                                        Joe Ricciardi reported on the 2 meetings that the officers and trustees had regarding a change in the club format.  The meetings were held September 16 and September 23, prior to the regular membership meeting.  The bylaws are in the process of being rewritten using 3 officers to serve equally as President.  The three officers would be voted on by the membership including the positions of treasurer, secretary, corresponding secretary, and sergeant at arms.  The general membership would vote on the bylaw changes at the October meeting and at that meeting there would also be nominations for the various positions.  The board would then have a meeting in January to discuss the budget, direction of club, and committees.  Lou Schott then read an email that was sent to all members dated Sept 20 that indicated the process of the changes by the board.                            

GACF:                                                 Ed Goldman mentioned the Chinese auction to be held in October at the Eagleswood fire house.  He also mentioned they are still trying to work out details to have a one-month fishing derby in 2020 to raise funds. 

TOURNAMENTS:                               No report.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                   Dave Burke reported that most of the meeting was discussion about hunting. Part of the discussion was about the annual deer hunt at the FAA Tech Center.  They also discussed the NJOA sporting clays shoot at Redwing on October 5.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      No report.

GACF:                                                Nothing new, meeting scheduled September 18.

TOURNAMENTS:                            No new weigh-in slips for perch or striper.

SUNSHINE:                                       Dr. John Glassy is fighting cancer.  Need to send him a card from the club.  Frank Elbertson is doing OK but still fighting cancer.

FEDERATION:                                 There will be a meeting on September 13.   

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                Lou went to the last meeting and there were 3 options for 2020 striper: 1 – no change; 2 -18% commercial, -20% residential; 3 -1.8 % commercial, -18 % residential.  Meeting to discuss will be held September 14. 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  No report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Bank statements. Renew charity registration. Tickets to Jersey Shore boat show.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               The Day on the Bay was a success. Lots of fish were caught and the kids had a great time.  BBQ was good and medals were presented to all the kids. Dave will contact Jen Price to get pictures. All T-Shirt and Raffle money is in.

NEW BUSINESS:                              None.

PICNIC:                                              Lou gave a report. Around 65 people attended.  The food was great and the music was good.  It was suggested that 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons be put in front of the winning desserts. Ran out of soda, water, & eggs to bread the fish.

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

August 26, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the August 12, 2019 meeting were read and approved with two corrections:  President Van Daley presided over the meeting, not Lou Schott.  Also, the GACF auction will be held at Eaglewood Fire Station, not Eaglewood Landing.   The treasurer’s report was not available.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                       No report.

GACF:                                                Ed Goldman advised that the state of NJ now allows organizations to

auction off alcohol, so they will do so.  Ed also reported that the GACF is considering a fishing derby for stripers and bluefish in the month of June.  They are considering using overall length instead of weight.  

TOURNAMENTS:                             No report.

SUNSHINE:                                        Steve Pinkus had spine surgery, and is recuperating at Betty Bacharach for

at least two more weeks; Frank Elbertson is fighting lung cancer.

FEDERATION:                                  Off for the summer but will have a meeting in September.   

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                There will be an open-to-the-public meeting at the Ocean City Library

on Wednesday, September 4 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                      No report.

PICNIC:                                              Lou Schott reported that picnic plans are progressing.  Brian Smallwood will again provide music.  Food and beverages will be purchased next week. Crab cleaning will take place on Saturday, September 7 at Andersons on Oyster Creek.  Members are needed to help to set up picnic tables at the Cologne Fire House on Saturday at 6 PM.

August 12, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President Lou Schott with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the July 8, 2019 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was read and accepted.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:          

TRUSTEES:                                     No report.

GACF:                                               There will be a meeting next Wednesday. Chinese auction was moved to Eagles Landing firehouse on November 2. 

TOURNAMENTS:                          Results from the open and fourth in house results were read. Discussed moving the open tournament to June, as this year was very hot and may have deterred folks from entering.  Also discussed lowering the weakfish and bluefish sizes, and possibly charge $25-30 for each person fishing on boat.

SUNSHINE:                                     No report.

FEDERATION:                               No report.      

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:            Jim attended the NJMF meeting.
