Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 8:05 pm in the downstairs of the American Legion.  Dave Burke took notes for the minutes.    A salute to the flag was made.  Eight members were present including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Joe Ricciardi, Bill Will, Rich Oeser and Ed Goldman.  Attendees wore masks and sat at least 6 feet apart. Note:  most members present had received one or both doses of the Covid 19 vaccine.  

April 12 Minutes: Approved as e-mailed. 

Treasurer’s Report:   Bill Will made the motion to approve the report.  The motion was approved. 

Board Meeting: Did not meet.

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:  Next meeting May 13. 

Communications:  None. A problem was reported adding people to our Facebook site. 

Marine Fisheries: Fluke season will begin on May 22.  Dave Burke said that bonus striper tags were mailed to applicants.  Ed Goldman noted that there are vacancies on the Marine Fisheries Council.

Tournaments:  It is unlikely that the Nuncio Bruno Kid’s Bluefish Tournament will be held this year.  The Sneaky Hollow Sportsmen will hold their annual perch tournament on May 1. The club will have a perch tournament on May 15 and its’ first regular tournament on May 29. Pomona Gunning Club will hold its’ annual fluke tournament on June 12.  Atlantic County Game Preserve will hold a fishing tournament on June 12.  The club’s second tournament will also be on June 12.

The Landisville Gunning Club had its’ perch tournament on 4/17; there were 300 competitors.  The winners took $2500 in prize money.

Sunshine:  Jack Herman is at home and feeling better according to Lou Schott. 

Membership: No new member applications.  Charle Elwell reported that we have 54 paid members.

Old Business:   Dredging of Absecon Creek will begin possibly by the end of May.      

New Business:  The Scott’s Landing boat ramp is closed for repairs and upgrades.    Ed Goldman mentioned that the Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund will hold a craft fair on Pitney Road and that they thanked the club for the recent donation.

Good of the Order:  Lou Schott mentioned the Youth Pheasant Shoot had been a success in the past but was being jeopardized by too many new State rules.  Ed Goldman mentioned that the RFA needs to raise money to support its’ lobbying/recreational fishing efforts.  Ed is the acting president of the NJ Chapter of RFA.   

Adjournment:  Motion made at 8:33 pm.  Motion approved. 

Next Meeting: May 10 at 8:00 pm.  Meeting will be held in the downstairs, bar area of the Legion.

Minutes April 12, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi.  A salute to the flag was made and a moment of silence was observed. Ten members were present.   The minutes of the March 8, 2021 meeting were approved.

Federation:                  Dave Burke advised that they held annual youth shoot at Red Wing, again handled by Butch Conover. Approximately 60 youths attended.  There was no food provided this year due to the pandemic.  The Federation has not decided yet on whether to have their annual venison dinner.

Communications:         In the Fisherman magazine, Dave Burke posted about our officers, fishing awards, and upcoming tournaments for members. The calendars, along with new club decals have been mailed to members.

Marine Fisheries:         No report.

Tournaments:               No report.

Sunshine:                     No report.

Membership:                No new members.

Old Business:               The Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund has not had any meetings but they do have zoom or email conferences. They are still giving money to people in need due to their health.  There was discussion about dredging of Absecon Creek/Bay. The city wants to start in September and the dredging company wants to start by July. Itmay be dredged to 8 feet. Spoils will be going to the marsh near Pleasantville, not far from the AC Expressway. We currently have 47 paid members and 7 of them are lifetime members.

New Business:              The state is now issuing the striper bonus tags and they will be effective May 12, not waiting until September.  Trout season opened April 10.

Good of the Order:       Lou Schott brought members up to date about Jack Hermann.  Jack went into surgery in April to have a cancerous bladder removed. During the procedure, he developed a heart issue and they had to stop the operation. He is home now until the hospital decides the next step.

Next Meeting:               April 26 at 8:00 pm.  Lou Schott, acting Secretary.  Meetings are now held twice per month.

March 8, 2021 Meeting

Minutes March 8, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 7:30 pm in the upstairs of the American Legion.  A salute to the flag was made.  Eleven members were present including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Charles Elwell, John Reese, and Joe Ricciardi.  Attendees wore masks and sat at least 6 feet apart.  Note:  most members present had received one or both doses of the Covid 19 vaccine.  

February 8 Minutes: Approved as e-mailed. 

Board Meeting: The trustees met after the February 8 regular meeting. The budget, tournament dates, fishing derbies, club picnic, club calendar and possible perch tournament were discussed.  The status of the kid’s bluefish tournament held with and at Chestnut Neck Boat Yard is unknown due to the pandemic.  The club picnic will tentatively be held on Sunday, September 12. The club perch tournament will be held on Saturday, May 15.  Members and their guests may fish by boat, kayak or land.  The entry fee will be by individual not by boat.  Details on the perch tournament will be announced at a future date.  Our seasonal derbies will be for bluefish, perch, fluke and striped bass.  A tentative date for the open tournament is June 26.  Club tournament dates are: 5/29, 6/12, 7/24 and 8/7.  Weakfish were added to the club tournaments. Details on the above will be announced.   

Communications:  A bank statement and letter from NJ Weights and Measures were received.  Joe Ricciardi stated that we should get rid of the old Face Book page.  An e-mail was received from a member regarding club dues. 

Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club Meeting:  Dave Burke reported that the meeting was held on February 11.   There will be a youth sporting clays event at Red Wind Sporting Clays on March 13.  The Federation donated $175 for a sponsorship sign at the event.  Due to the pandemic, the event was scaled back from previous years.  The 2020-21 deer kill was 54,000 up 8,200 over the prior year.  Hunting and fishing license sales were up for 2020.  Trout season will open on April 10.   Many sportsmen would like to see the Hunting Digest revamped to be more user friendly.  A statewide committee was created to provide input. There was an arrest made concerning the hunter that was murdered in Pile Hill.  Next meeting March 11 (8 pm at Germania Gunning Club, Moss Mill Rd, Galloway.)

Marine Fisheries: Fluke season will begin on May 22.  The definition of bait for striper fishing is being reviewed as it pertains to mandatory use of circle hooks. 

Tournaments:  After discussion by members in attendance It was decided that the heaviest striper will determine the striper derby winner.   Other club perch tournaments in the area include Landisville on April 17 and Sneaky Hollow on May 1.  Details regarding our club perch tournament will be announced.  Note: tentative date of our perch tournament was changed to May 15 after the regular meeting due to a conflict.   A perch weighing 1.85 pounds was entered in the club derby by Dave Roesch. 

Sunshine:  Guy Wilkins is recovering at home and is looking forward to fishing this spring. 

Membership: No new member applications.   Approximately half of the regular members have renewed their membership.

Old Business: Membership cards, decals and calendars will be mailed later this month.

New Business:  Jim Van Daley requested a donation be made to the Cancer Society.  After discussion regarding the amount to donate, a motion was made by John Reese to donate $200.  The motion carried by a vote of 10 to 1.    The officers noted that there is a $200 limit for most donations. 

Good of the Order: 2020 derby winners were Guy Wilkins (7.89-pound fluke) and John Reese (1.90 -pound perch).  No stripers were entered.  Winners received $35 and certificates.  2020 club tournament winners were Jeff Reese (largest fluke 4.57 pounds); Brian Will (fluke category winner); Dave Burke (largest blue 2.97 pounds and bluefish category winner).  Fisherman of the Year for 2020 was Dave Burke.  Trophies were awarded for the largest fish and category winners.

February 8, 2021 Meeting

Meeting Notes – February 8, 2021

The meeting opened at 7:30 PM, February 8, with Joe Ricciardi presiding. 

January 12 Minutes:  The minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer’s Report:  The treasurers report was read and approved.   Joe announced there would be a board meeting after the general meeting.

Tournaments: Dave Burke reported that there will not be a HOFNOD at Patriot Lake this year, due to the pandemic.          

Facebook:  No report.

Communications: Bank statement.

Atlantic County Federation:  They discussed the use of circle hooks for striped bass.  They will also have the annual youth sporting clays shoot at Red Wing on March 13, with a rain date of March 20.  For information, contact Butch Conover at 609-652-8342.

Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund: They have not had a regular meeting but they have been giving some money out to those in need.

Marine Fisheries: Per Ed Goldman, regulations for Fluke are supposed to be the same as last year regarding size and limits.   Regarding Absecon Creek and Bay, bids are out for dredging and the bids are due by February 28.  The area has not been dredged for about 20 years.

Membership:             No new members.

Sunshine:                   No members reported sick.  

Old Business:             The new club decals have finally been made and Lou should be picking them up this week.

New Business:           No report.

Good of the Order:  Dave Roesch brought up the idea of cleaning up the environment, by picking up any trash or plastic that we see floating around in the water.  Lou discussed the wind turbine project in the ocean from Barnegat to an area past Ocean City.  Lou was one of 87 people that listened in on Zoom.  Most of the 87 people were charter boat captains or head boat captains.  A lot of good questions were raised and answered. People in Ocean City were opposed since they didn’t want to see the “windmills” and some don’t want the cable running through Ocean City to the power plant.   There will be additional Zooms.  It was interesting.

January 12, 2021 Meeting

Meeting Notes – January 12, 2021

The meeting was opened at 7:30 pm by trustee Dave Burke with Lou Schott as acting secretary. 

December 14 Minutes: The minutes were approved with a correction from last month’s treasurers report where the closing balance of the charity account numbers were reversed.

Treasurer’s Report:  here was a proposal by Dave Burke to delay billing for dues due to the economic conditions, after discussion, it was felt to send bills out anyway.

Tournaments: Dave Burke brought up the idea of having a club perch tournament.  It was also discussed from previous meetings that other varieties of fish be put in our tournaments, weakfish, tog, drum, etc.  We will send a questionnaire to members for their input.     

FACEBOOK:  Dave Holmes said he updated Facebook and added questions for new people interested in our Facebook page.

Communications: No report.

Atlantic County Federation:  Dave Burk reported that the Federation will not be sending dues bills to members.  Also, there will be no youth shoot at Red Wing Sporting Clays this year.  And there will not be a Federation venison dinner this year.

Marine Fisheries:    No report. 

Membership:           No new members.

Sunshine:                  No members reported sick.  

Old Business:           Lou Schott reported that our club decal has been sent out to get a price or get new decals made at no cost.   It was decided that after the February general membership meeting we would hold a board meeting.

December 14, 2020 Meeting

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was called to order in the in the upstairs of the American Legion at approximately 7:30 pm.  Attendees were required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart.  Eight members were in attendance:  Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Bill Will, Dave Roesch and Mark Simpson (new member).   A salute to the flag was made.  Joe Ricciardi ran the meeting. Dave Burke took notes for the minutes. 

November 10 Minutes: Approved as e-mailed. 

Treasurer’s Report:    The report was accepted as read. 

Tournaments: The striper and perch derbies will continue until the end of the year.   No one entered a striper to date.  Certificates will be awarded to the winners. The tournament committee will decide on whether gift certificates or checks will be awarded.   Lou suggested we give awards at a future club meeting and have pizza.   Lou also suggested we have more species in the annual derby in 2021. Dave Roesch suggested that black drum and weakfish be added to the regular tournaments. 

Communications:  Bank statement and bill from the State for the scale certification. 

Atlantic County Federation:  Dave Burke reported that the next meeting will be held on December 17 (rescheduled due to conflict with six-day buck season.   

Marine Fisheries: No report. 

Membership: Mark Simpson was welcomed as a new member.  His dues were paid and will be valid for 2021.    

Sunshine:  No members reported sick.  

Nominations: No additional nominations were made.  Officers will remain the same for 2021.   

Old Business: The annual installation and awards dinner is postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.    

New Business:  Availability of club decals was discussed. There was discussion on the dredging of Absecon Creek.  Joe reported that most channel markers had been removed for the season and caution is needed in navigating the creek. Joe will contact the mayor on the status of dredging.  Dave Burke made a motion to postpone 2021 dues collection from regular members due to the pandemic and limited activities of the club.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Dues will be collected from new members.    Joe will work on the 2021 club calendar. 

Good of the Order:  Perch and striper fishing remain good.  Charlie reported good catch and release striper fishing in the ocean.  Dave Showell’s charter fishing parties have been catching keeper bass.   

The club officers wish everyone a healthy, safe and happy holiday season.

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was called to order in the in the upstairs of the American Legion at 7:37 pm.  Attendees were required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart.  The meeting night was changed from the second Monday to the second Tuesday due a meeting conflict.  Only five members were in attendance:  Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell and Jim Van Daley.  A salute to the flag was made.  Joe Ricciardi ran the meeting.

October 12 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

  

Tournaments: The striper and perch derbies will continue until the end of the year.   A suggestion was again made to post the entries to date. Complete information was not available. John Reese entered a 1.90 pound perch caught on March 17.  One flounder had been entered during the season but no stripers to date.  Lou Schott suggested we have more species in the derby in 2021.

Communications: Only a bank statement. 

Membership: An application was received and approved for Mark Simpson.  His dues will be valid for 2021 when paid.   

Sunshine:  No members reported sick.  

Nominations: A motion was made to nominate the current officers during the October meeting.  No additional nominations were made.  The election of officers will be held in December.

Old/New Business: None. 

Good of the Order:  Joe asked that we “Like” what we see about the club on Face Book.  This will help with club visibility and membership.  Perch and striper fishing remain good.

September 14 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

Treasurer’s Report:  Charles Elwell was not present and there was no report. 

Tournaments: No additional club tournaments are scheduled; however, the striper and perch derbies will continue until the end of the year.   A suggestion was again made to post the entries to date.  (We will ask Charlie Elwell to provide info at next meeting.)

40th Anniversary T – Shirts:  Lou Schott has 36 shirts.  Shirts will continue to be sold ($10).   

Membership: No new applications.

Communications: None. 

Sunshine:  No members reported sick.   The Club noted the passing of Frank Elbertson. Frank had been a member for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and passed along his passion for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren.  His son Hunter is a current member. 

Nominations: A motion was made to nominate the current officers.  Nominations will remain open for the next meeting.

Old/New Business:  Joe Ricciardi is coordinating auctioning/sale of donated fishing equipment.  Income received will be deposited in the charity account. 

Good of the Order:  Dave Roesch reported good fishing for blowfish in Tuckerton Bay.  A recent catch was on Facebook.  Perch fishing is also good.  The Forsythe NWR has a kayak launching site on Lily Lake.  Fall trout stocking has begun.  Trout were stocked in Hammonton Lake.  Information is available on the NJ DFG&W website.

The meeting was called to order in the in the upstairs of the American Legion at 7:35 pm.  Attendees were required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart.  Eight members were in attendance:  Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Rich Oeser, Bill Will and Dave Roesch.  A salute to the flag was made. 

August 10 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

Tournaments: No additional tournaments are scheduled; however, the fluke, striper and perch derby will continue until the end of the year or season closes (fluke).   A suggestion was made to post the entries to date.

40th Anniversary T – Shirts:  There was discussion as to what to do with the shirts.  Additional shirts will be given to sponsors.  Shirts will continue to be sold ($10) and may be given as door prizes at future events. 

Membership: No new applications.

Good of the Order:  Dave Roesch reported that weakfish (up to 3.5 lbs.), stripers and Spanish mackerel were being caught in Great Bay.  John Reese reported that perch fishing had been good (his largest to date was 1.9 lbs.).  Lou Schott and Rich Oeser also caught perch.  Joe Ricciardi reported he had caught small mahi and false albacore off Atlantic City.  Lou Schott commented on a recent editorial in the Press of Atlantic City.

August 10, 2020 Meeting

Meeting Notes – August 10, 2020

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was again held at the rear yard of the American Legion at 7:40 pm.  Eight members were in attendance including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Rich Oeser, Bill Will and Dave Roesch. 

Tournament: Fishing conditions were fair for the third club tournament held on August 1. Nine boats were entered.  Fluke:  Dave Roesch took third place with 8.56 lbs.  Charles Elwell took second place with 9.50 pounds.  First place was taken by Jeff Reese with 11.93 pounds.  Jeff also took the prize for largest fluke at 4.57   pounds.  Dave Burke took first place for bluefish with 2.63 pounds and largest blue at 1.25 pounds.  The were no other bluefish entries. 

40th Anniversary T-Shirts: The t-shirts are available for $10.  Joe Ricciardi will have them for sale at his store during regular business hours.  (Wear a face mask when you enter his store.)

Membership: No new applications. 

Club Picnic: After considerable discussion (State rules, lack of location, unknown interest, cost and general concern for the pandemic) the membership voted to cancel the picnic for this year.  

New Business: None. 

Old Business:  None.

Discussion:  Lou Schott attended a special event in Maryland honoring his uncle, a WWII veteran who was celebrating his 100th birthday.  Lou’s uncle, who has the same name, was a marine and had served in major Pacific battles. 

Joe Ricciardi reported that a portion of the Absecon Creek had little water at low tide.

Dave Roesch reported good perch fishing in Collins Cove. 

Dave Burke Reported good kingfish fishing in Great Bay.
