ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

September 10, 2018

 

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of August 27 were read and approved with one minor change.  “Good of the Order” and the next meeting date were wrong.   The treasurer’s report was also approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                        No report.

 

GACF:                                                 No report.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                              Perch and Striper are ongoing.

 

SUNSHINE:                                        Lou reported that Pete Rapetti is recovering but is still weak.

 

FEDERATION:                                   No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                   There will be a meeting on Cobia.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                     No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Need to post recent “Day on the Bay” and annual picnic photos.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Received bank statements.  Tickets received for boat show at Lakewood.

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                  There is a discrepancy with the money collected for the raffle.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                Jim suggested that the FOD be added to the Open tournament signs but it was pointed out that the signs are already very busy and hard to read from passing cars.  Jim is going to check into selling raffle tickets at the National Night Out events next year. JD’s told Jim that they would be willing to hold the Open tournament BBQ for $11/head and it would include beer and soda.

 

PICNIC:                                              Lou reported that the picnic was break even at best.  Given the weather, it was still a good time with over 50 people in attendance. The extra food will be donated to the food bank and he will try to return unopened food to SAMs. Agreed to donate $200 to the firehouse. We will advertise that it will be BYOB next year. The dessert contest winners are; 1st – Heidi Tort, 2nd– Christine Jespersen, 3rd– Carol Fries.

August 27, 2018 Minutes

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN
MINUTES
August 27, 2018

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of August 12 were and approved with one minor change. The meeting of August 27 will be held downstairs, not upstairs. The treasurer’s report was read and approved. Account balances: Charity – $1,025.27; General – $459.96; Raffle – $1,090.53.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: No date has been set for the Coach purse bingo.

TOURNAMENTS: Perch and Striper are ongoing.

SUNSHINE: Lou reported that Pete Rapetti had a successful carotid artery surgery done. This was the third attempt. Lou reported about a tragic boating accident in which a member, John Zuccarino, died. He and the operator, Jack Herman, also a member, were both thrown out of Jack’s boat in the middle of Great Bay. Jack hit the gunnel of the boat as he went overboard. The same may have happened to John, who died in the water. Two boats came to help them out of the water. The marine police and the Coast Guard arrived on the scene. The boat was towed to Great Bay Marina and the 2 men were taken to AC Medical Center.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi discussed the Crabsecon event to be held September 15 at 2 locations: Turner Cove and Faunce Landing. Shuttles will transport people to the events. Raffle tickets: Rich Oesser reported he has about 50 unsold tickets, which will be taken to the picnic and the drawing will be held there. President Van Daley asked if thank you letters were sent out for the kids bluefish tournament and the open tournament.

NEW BUSINESS: No report.

PICNIC: Lou Schott discussed, in detail, the picnic and the pre picnic work to be done and asked for volunteers. He wants to get the new members involved. John Reese, who handles many portions of the picnic, will be out of town and will miss the picnic.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Sent Rutgers survey to members. Root Beer Barrel will be closing. Zeus is out of business. Joe suggested a mini Striper tournament in November on Absecon Inlet and to go to breakfast afterwards.

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the July 23 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                         No report.

 

GACF:                                                 GACF needed to apply for a 501C in order to get the tax-free status in order to purchase the Coach purses for the Bingo.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                               Last In-house tournament was on Saturday. Perch and Striper are ongoing.

 

SUNSHINE:                                         John Reese was released from the hospital. Chino passed away, local clammer. Funeral was well attended.

 

FEDERATION:                                    No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                    Governor Murphy signed bill S-2793/A-4255, which will give $3.668 million to protect prime fishing habitat. There is one seat open on the counsel.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                     No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                      Posted kids bluefish and open tournament pictures.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                         Received bank statements.

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                 No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                   There are still 50 tickets available for the raffle. There were not a lot of people at the Absecon National Night Out. Jim will look into selling raffle tickets at the Galloway National Night Out next year. Absecon Mayor called Joe to inform him that the Crabsecon event is only beer, wine, food, and entertainment.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                 Day on the Bay is next Monday (August 20) and volunteers are needed. Elks is on board.  Lou will bring a cooler of bottled water. Dave will take pictures from his boat. We have T-shirts and medals for the kids.

 

PICNIC:                                               Lou talked with Bill Will and secured the Cologne firehouse for Sunday, Sept. 9.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                     Sent Rutgers survey to members. Root Beer barrel will be closing. Zeus is out of business. Joe suggested a mini Striper tournament in November on Absecon Inlet and go to breakfast afterwards.

July 23, 2017

 

President Jim Van Daley brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the July 9 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                       No report.

 

GACF:                                                For various reasons, the GABT will not combine with the LIBT next year. There were no bidders on the Phillies tickets. Joe from Ace Hardware said they would donate to next year’s tournament.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                            Open tournament went well with 35 boats entered. Many good door prizes were given out. Maybe give a Sunshine tournament entry. There are 3 outstanding Sponsors to collect. Should add our 501C number to our entry form so captains can deduct the feet on tax return.

 

SUNSHINE:                                        Sent a card to Elmer Fredd for his daughter’s passing.

 

FEDERATION:                                  No report.

July 9, 2017

 

The meeting was brought to order by President, Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the June 25 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report were read and approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                     No report.

 

GACF:                                               Joe reported that 23 boats entered the tournament. The food afterwards was good and everyone had a good time. There was a Chinse auction.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                          Door prizes are coming in for the open tournament; need to add Smithville Barber shop. We will be cooking our own corn at the BBQ afterwards. Still need to finalize with Pitney Pub. Plan to have a prize for the non-winners. Need to make sure we get the ASWS Logo added to the Sunshine foundation Add book next year. Next In-house is July 21.

 

SUNSHINE:                                      Elmer Fredd’s daughter passed. Jack Petro passed and Lou sent Janet a card

 

FEDERATION:                                The Federation newsletter had the Kids Bluefish tournament and our open tournament listed.

June 25, 2017

 

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President, Lou Schott with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the June 11 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was not available.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              Joe Ricciardi submiited that the  annual tournament , which has been                                                                                                         renamed in honor of John Dunn, is            scheduled for June 29. Scott’s Dock                                                                                          has been added as a weigh-in station.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                        In house tournament results to date are on the website and will be included in                                                                                        the meeting minutes. The next tournament is on July 21st. The signs for the open                                                                  tournament have been placed and the calcutta will be increased to $20.00.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Gary Shreeves (Scott’s father) had a stroke and is out of the hospital now. Guy                                                                                         Wilkins is recovering from a surgery as is his youger brother, Ed.

 

FEDERATION:                                     No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           Meeting will be held in Ocean City and Toms River on June 27th and 28th with regard to tranfering some of the recreational Bluefish quota to commercial fishermen.

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 We received a thank you letter from the Fish and Wildlife Service

NEW BUSINESS:                                           An email will be sent to the membership containing links to sites with informatinabout the Modern fish Act. Plans for the club picnic began with an emphasis on filling in for John Reese’s anticipated absense to accomplish the many tasks that he has been performing for the club that have been such a large part of the picnic’s successs all these years. Joe Fumo has been informed that the Field of Dreams Fishing Trip will be held on August 20th this year.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             The kids’ bluefish tournament held at Chestnut Neck was a big success with big turnout.

                                                                           Jim realized late that he had a $150 check toward prizes but will use it next year instead.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             Posted Patriot Lake perch tournament pictures.   Need bluefish tournament photos from Dave Holmes.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 Received bank statements and a thank you from GACF; Field of Dreams is requesting donations.  Request for donation from a Rutgers’ student was denied (charity budget is low).

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                      New member application received and approved from Doug Keeping.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          Raffle tickets still being sold.  Plaque for Fisherman of the Year was updated.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                           Looking into add second place awards to Perch and Striper tournament to entice more entries.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Pomona Gun Club had 25 boats and 60 anglers registered for their tournament last weekend. Their 50/50 was $800.

OPEN TOURNAMENT:                Jim Van Daley purchased stickers to update tournament signs with this year’s dates.

 

Need to line up T-Shirt Sponsors.

 

Door prizes need to be collected, and retailers assigned to member volunteers.

 

Discussed a possibility of a Calcutta for Sea Robin.

 

Discussed possibility for $500 prize for the largest fish, although many felt $500 was too much and

that $100 or $250 was more appropriate.

 

Discussed possibility that all non-winners be entered into a drawing for a cash or prize award.

 

Jim stated that T-shirts will only be given to T-shirt sponsors, not door prize donors.

 

Talked to Ocean County Sunshine Foundation to see if they will send our flyer to their captains’ list and vice versa.

 

Discussed a second Calcutta for more money to attract additional interest and possibly “high roller” anglers.

May 14 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the April 23 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                        No report.

 

GACF:                                                                   Tournament on June 30, still very little details. There is a meeting on Wednesday where more details should be available.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                             A 3.8 Lb. perch was entered by Jeff Reese in the yearlong tournament..

 

SUNSHINE:                                                         Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.  Brian Will is doing well after his shoulder operation.

 

FEDERATION:                                                  Reported deer kill was up this past season.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                              The Governor approved Sea Bass opening day, one day before it opened.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                                10 fishing poles were donated for the kids’ Bluefish tournament.  Fishing poles donated last year will be given out.  Need volunteers to show up on Friday to stuff Sea Tow bags and Saturday for the tournament. T-Shirts are ready to be picked up.  Lou will purchase soda and water. Need to purchase stud from Absecon Sportsmen center and Chestnut Neck Boatyard to put in bags.

                                                                                Not as many volunteers showed up for the Patriot Lake Perch tournament.  About 50 kids were in the tournament.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                                Need to post Patriot Lake Perch tournament pictures.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                     Received GABT raffle tickets and passed all of them out. Received Dues and Bank Statements.  RFA is looking for donations.

 

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                         No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                             Raffle tickets are in and Rich Oeser volunteered to manage to distribution and money collection.  Open tournament signs need to be updated and distributed. Joe volunteered to put one quickly at the FOD field.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                              Joe is updating Membership application with current businesses giving discounts to club members.

 

 

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                               Absecon Sportsmen Center is having a customer appreciation sale this weekend.

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

April 23, 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the April 9 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was not available.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              The GACF has been discussing a joint fishing tournament with the LIBT.  Not all the details are worked out but it will be a boat/shore/kayak tournament with winners in each division and separate entry fees as well.  The tournament will be held on June 30 as a one-day event, meaning the prizes will be awarded the same day.   Contestants will fish for striped bass, bluefish and flounder.  The GACF has coupons for sale at $5.00 which will give 25% off any purchase at Boscov’s on October 16.  The GACF also had raffle tickets at $5.00 each or 5 for $20.  The drawing will be June 3.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                         No report.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.  Brian Will had a shoulder operation last week.

 

FEDERATION:                                              We requested $200 for the kids’ bluefish tournament.  They gave us $300 since they had made a good profit from the annual venison dinner.   There were some critiques about the dinner but they will be corrected.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           No report.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             May 12 at Patriot Lake, we are looking for volunteers.   May 19 kids’ bluefish tournament, we have about 50 t-shirts and will purchase 50 more.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          No report on the raffle since Mr. Elwell was not present.

 

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            May 5 is the “Sneaky Hollow Perch Tournament” at $25.00 per person.  Landisville had their big perch tournament on April 21; $1100 was the prize for the biggest perch. They also had a raffle for a boat, motor, and trailer.  The heaviest 5 fish only weighed a total of 5.05 pounds.   The single largest was 1.65 pounds.  The Yeti cooler company broke their ties with the NRA.  There is also a new fishing club in the area per Joe Ricciardi.  It is called the Atlantic City Saltwater Anglers.

April 9, 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the March 12 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              A fundraiser dinner was held at the Pleasantville Yacht Club on Saturday, April 7th.  It was a great success, well attended with very good food and good entertainment.  Our club was well represented with 8 members and their guests.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                         There are 5 members signed up for all four tournaments so far.  The calendars are out showing the dates of the tournaments.  Cost is $120 to enter all 4 tournaments.  Our striper and perch yearly contests are open. No entries yet on them.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.

Brian Will had a shoulder operation last week.

 

FEDERATION:                                              No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           The fluke season for 2018 is similar to last year, 3 fish at 18 inches, from May 25 to Sept 22.  The seabass regulations were set but New York State is making an attempt to grab some of our quota.  More hearings on that.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             Will be held at Patriot Lake in Galloway on May 12.   Kids bluefish Tournament on May 19.  State of NJ will be at the weigh-in for the purpose of bluefish research.  An announcement will be made in the state federation newspaper.  Lou Schott also mentioned that he emailed the flyers for the bluefish tournament and the open tournament to the Fisherman magazine.

 

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             No report.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 Received bank statement, dues, and a notice from the LIBT that they will be having a fishing tournament sometime in June; date to be determined.

 

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                      No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          50 members have paid their dues so far.  Also, our raffle license is still up in the air as city of Port Republic will vote on approving it April 10, then it must go to state for their approval.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Rich Oesser mentioned that the Pomona Gun Club will be having their fluke tournament on June 9, the same date as ours.
