Meeting Notes – November 10, 2020

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was called to order in the in the upstairs of the American Legion at 7:37 pm.  Attendees were required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart.  The meeting night was changed from the second Monday to the second Tuesday due a meeting conflict.  Only five members were in attendance:  Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell and Jim Van Daley.  A salute to the flag was made.  Joe Ricciardi ran the meeting.

October 12 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

  

Tournaments: The striper and perch derbies will continue until the end of the year.   A suggestion was again made to post the entries to date. Complete information was not available. John Reese entered a 1.90 pound perch caught on March 17.  One flounder had been entered during the season but no stripers to date.  Lou Schott suggested we have more species in the derby in 2021.

Communications: Only a bank statement. 

Membership: An application was received and approved for Mark Simpson.  His dues will be valid for 2021 when paid.   

Sunshine:  No members reported sick.  

Nominations: A motion was made to nominate the current officers during the October meeting.  No additional nominations were made.  The election of officers will be held in December.

Old/New Business: None. 

Good of the Order:  Joe asked that we “Like” what we see about the club on Face Book.  This will help with club visibility and membership.  Perch and striper fishing remain good.

Next Meeting:  December 14, 7:30 pm. American Legion – Absecon.   Note there are new restrictions on meeting attendance.  This should not be a problem because our recent attendance has been below the limit.

September 14 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

Treasurer’s Report:  Charles Elwell was not present and there was no report. 

Tournaments: No additional club tournaments are scheduled; however, the striper and perch derbies will continue until the end of the year.   A suggestion was again made to post the entries to date.  (We will ask Charlie Elwell to provide info at next meeting.)

40th Anniversary T – Shirts:  Lou Schott has 36 shirts.  Shirts will continue to be sold ($10).   

Membership: No new applications.

Communications: None. 

Sunshine:  No members reported sick.   The Club noted the passing of Frank Elbertson. Frank had been a member for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and passed along his passion for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren.  His son Hunter is a current member. 

Nominations: A motion was made to nominate the current officers.  Nominations will remain open for the next meeting.

Old/New Business:  Joe Ricciardi is coordinating auctioning/sale of donated fishing equipment.  Income received will be deposited in the charity account. 

Good of the Order:  Dave Roesch reported good fishing for blowfish in Tuckerton Bay.  A recent catch was on Facebook.  Perch fishing is also good.  The Forsythe NWR has a kayak launching site on Lily Lake.  Fall trout stocking has begun.  Trout were stocked in Hammonton Lake.  Information is available on the NJ DFG&W website.

The meeting was called to order in the in the upstairs of the American Legion at 7:35 pm.  Attendees were required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart.  Eight members were in attendance:  Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Rich Oeser, Bill Will and Dave Roesch.  A salute to the flag was made. 

August 10 Minutes: Approved as mailed. 

Tournaments: No additional tournaments are scheduled; however, the fluke, striper and perch derby will continue until the end of the year or season closes (fluke).   A suggestion was made to post the entries to date.

40th Anniversary T – Shirts:  There was discussion as to what to do with the shirts.  Additional shirts will be given to sponsors.  Shirts will continue to be sold ($10) and may be given as door prizes at future events. 

Membership: No new applications.

Good of the Order:  Dave Roesch reported that weakfish (up to 3.5 lbs.), stripers and Spanish mackerel were being caught in Great Bay.  John Reese reported that perch fishing had been good (his largest to date was 1.9 lbs.).  Lou Schott and Rich Oeser also caught perch.  Joe Ricciardi reported he had caught small mahi and false albacore off Atlantic City.  Lou Schott commented on a recent editorial in the Press of Atlantic City.

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was again held at the rear yard of the American Legion at 7:40 pm.  Eight members were in attendance including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Rich Oeser, Bill Will and Dave Roesch. 

Tournament: Fishing conditions were fair for the third club tournament held on August 1. Nine boats were entered.  Fluke:  Dave Roesch took third place with 8.56 lbs.  Charles Elwell took second place with 9.50 pounds.  First place was taken by Jeff Reese with 11.93 pounds.  Jeff also took the prize for largest fluke at 4.57   pounds.  Dave Burke took first place for bluefish with 2.63 pounds and largest blue at 1.25 pounds.  The were no other bluefish entries. 

40th Anniversary T-Shirts: The t-shirts are available for $10.  Joe Ricciardi will have them for sale at his store during regular business hours.  (Wear a face mask when you enter his store.)

Membership: No new applications. 

Club Picnic: After considerable discussion (State rules, lack of location, unknown interest, cost and general concern for the pandemic) the membership voted to cancel the picnic for this year.  

New Business: None. 

Old Business:  None.

Discussion:  Lou Schott attended a special event in Maryland honoring his uncle, a WWII veteran who was celebrating his 100th birthday.  Lou’s uncle, who has the same name, was a marine and had served in major Pacific battles. 

Joe Ricciardi reported that a portion of the Absecon Creek had little water at low tide.

Dave Roesch reported good perch fishing in Collins Cove. 

Dave Burke Reported good kingfish fishing in Great Bay.

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was again held at the rear yard of the American Legion at 7:30 pm.  Eight members were in attendance including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, Charles Elwell, John Reese, Rich Oeser, Bill Will and Dave Roesch. 

Treasurer’s Report: 

Tournaments: Fishing conditions were poor for the second club tournament on July 11. Eight boats were entered.  Charles Elwell took first place for flounder.  Brian Will took second and had the biggest flounder.  Dave Burke took first place for bluefish.  Dave Roesch took second and had the biggest bluefish.   Lou Schott won the consolation drawing.  

Rich Oeser reported that the Pomona Gun Club had 45 boats and 138 anglers in their fluke tournament on June 27.  19 anglers weighed in fish. The 50:50 win was $450. 

40th Anniversary T-Shirts: Ten sponsors have been lined up and most have already paid.  John Reese indicated that the shirts are being made.

Membership: No new applications. 

Picnic: Lou Schott has arranged for Brian Smallwood to be the DJ.  No word on weather the picnic can be held at the Cologne Fire Hall.  No functions are currently being held at the fire hall. 

New Business: None. 

Old Business:  Lou Schott brought the donated fishing equipment for members to see.  No decision was made on how to sell it.  Money raised will be put in the charity account. 

Next Meeting:  The July 27 meeting was cancelled.  Next meeting will be August 10, 2020, 7:30 pm at the American Legion (probably outside).  An announcement will be sent.

June 22, 2020 Meeting

Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

The meeting was held at the rear yard of the American Legion at 7 pm.  Seven people were in attendance including Lou Schott, Dave Burke, Joe Ricciardi, John Reese, Dave Roesch, Charles Elwell and Rich Oeser.

Treasurer’s Report:  Elwell reported that there were no changes is the account balances. 

June 13 Tournament Results: 10 boats entered.  Check our Facebook page for pictures taken by Ed Goldman.

40th Club Anniversary T-shirts:  John Reese has been contacting potential sponsors and a vendor.  Shirts will have a pocket, our logo and sponsors on back.  Tentative plans call for ordering: 5 XXX large, 35 XX large, 30 X large, and 20 larges.  Sponsors will get a free shirt.  Price for purchase to be determined.  

Donated Fishing Equipment: Lou Schott obtained donated equipment including rods, reels, tackle boxes and terminal tackle.  Monies raised from sale of the items will be deposited in the charity account.  Minimum values and procedures for sales to be determined. Items may be made available to members at a meeting or the club picnic. 

No Other Reports or Business.

June 6, 2020 Meeting

Minutes:  Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club

June 6, 2020

The meeting was held in the open area at the rear of the American Legion Hall at 7 pm.  Six people were in attendance including Lou Schott, John Reese, Charles Elwell and Dave Burke. 

Tournaments:  A club tournament will be held on June 13.  Cash and points will be awarded for the 3 heaviest fluke and 3 heaviest bluefish (1st, 2nd and 3rd place). There is also cash for the heaviest fish in each category.  As of the meeting, 9 boats were signed-up.  Notify Charles Elwell by Friday night if you want to participate and have not signed up.  The club will subsidize the cash prizes with $200.  The entry fee is $40 per boat and all money will be returned as cash prizes.  Weigh-in will be held at the J/W Restaurant on Faunce Landing Rd (formerly the Up-the-Creek) from 2-3:30.  No food will be served by the club.  The restaurant may be open for food.  Face covering and social distancing rules apply at the weigh-in.   Fishing rules are the same as in the past.  Fish from 6 am until 2 pm.   The second club tournament will be held on July 11.  The third club tournament will be held on August 1. There will be no open tournament this year.  Dave Burke suggested the club consider inviting non-members to participate in a future tournament to attract new members.  

The Pomona Gunning Club rescheduled their fluke tournament for June 27.

New Members: The club welcomes Gene Doebley and Lester Bell as new members. 

Face Book: Joe Ricciardi (not present) encourages members to join and post pictures and comments.  He has been giving prizes for club-member, picture posts.  Several members have been posted their catches.  For example, Chris Peszka was first to post a picture of a nice fluke caught from his kayak and won a prize.  Check out the club face book site for posts and pictures. 

Club 40th Anniversary T-shirts: John Reese will get a price for the shirts.  There was discussion regarding color, sizes, sponsors, design and layout.

March 9, 2020 Meeting

March 9, 2020

The meeting was called to order by Joe Ricciardi at 7:30 p.m.  Eleven members were in attendance.  A salute to the flag and moment of silence were observed. 

February 10, 2020 Minutes:  Lou Schott read the minutes which were approved after a motion by John Reese.      

Trustees:  A meeting was held before the regular meeting.  The kid’s bluefish tournament was discussed.  “T” shirts will be ordered after cost estimates are received. Dave Burke submitted information regarding the tournament to The Fisherman magazine and will contact other publications requesting posting tournament information. Tournament plans are progressing well.  Sponsors, door prizes and cash support are needed. The annual raffle was discussed. A fishing trip with a local captain is being considered as a top prize.    

Treasurer’s Report:  Several checks were issued: NJ Weights and Measures $25 (scale), postage $44, Post Office box rental $168, annual hall rent $450, trophies $219, plaques $199, NJ Games of Chance (raffle) $100, club registration $55.  Three deposits were made in the amounts of $385, $395 and $265. Note: Annual club dues ($35) are due and payable to the Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen’s Club.  Dues may be submitted to Charles Elwell 333 Zion Road, Egg Harbor Township 08234. 

Atlantic County Federation:  The annual venison dinner was held on Monday, February 17 (President’s Day) at Holy Trinity Greek Church, EHT.  Members who attended stated that it was a great dinner and the food was excellent.  The 50:50 paid out over $2,000.  The annual youth sporting clays shoot will be held at Red Wing Sporting Clays on March 14. 

Tournaments:  Our first inhouse tournament will be held on May 23 for bluefish only.  An announcement on the Open Fishing Tournament was prepared and distributed at the AC Boat show.  It will be posted at local marinas and boat ramps. 

Hooked on Fishing:  Lou Schott attended a meeting on the May 9 youth fishing derby to be held at Patriot Lake in Galloway Twp.  Volunteers are needed at the derby from about 8 am to 12 noon. Contact Lou if you can help.  Kids ages 5 – 12 are eligible. Parents/guardians can register their children by calling 609-652-1665.  The event is presented by Galloway Twp. and Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.  

GACF: Ed Goldman reported the group surveyed people that stopped by their booth at the AC Boat Show regarding a possible month-long fishing derby which would include a $50 entry fee.  Response was mixed and no decision on the derby has been made.  The Club banner was on display at the GACF booth and open tournament information was available.    

Website/Facebook:  Bob Cusack advised Joe Ricciardi that updates had been made.  Joe encouraged the membership to visit the sites and post information/comments. 

Sunshine:  Jack Herman was in the hospital for tests and was released.  Jim Van Daley stopped by the meeting to drop off old records and said he was feeling better after a hospital visit.

NJ Marine Council:   The March 5 meeting was cancelled. Next meeting May 14. 

Membership Applications: One application was received at the meeting. The club welcomed Dave Roesch and Bob Fenton as new members.  Joe Ricciardi updated the membership application and distributed copies at the meeting.

New/Old Business: A member discussed needed dredging of Absecon Creek with the Mayor. The Mayor advised that the City would be gathering information including doing a survey of channel depths.  

Good of the Order: The Atlantic County Game Preserve will host its’ 1st annual white perch tournament & fish fry on May 9.  Fishing time will be 6 am and weigh in will be 2 pm. There is a $25 entry fee ($10 for kids under 12 or under).  Location:  ACGP Clubhouse, Rt 50 Estell Manor.  Fish anywhere in NJ.  To register and for more information contact Jim Sykes 609-839-4889 or Jaime Lloyd 609-703-6143.  Several of our club members fish the spring perch tournaments in South Jersey and often win top prizes.

After the regular meeting, John Reese gave a short presentation on his perch fishing techniques.  John uses a double hook rig with 10-pound leader for easy break off when snagged on bottom.    A good discussion followed the presentation.  Schools of stripers are reported to have moved into the Great Egg Harbor River. 

Next Meeting:   Monday, April 13, 2020 is cancelled due to the Corona Virus.

February 10, 2020

Dave Burke opened the meeting with a salute and moment of silence. Since all minutes were emailed they were not read but there were some errors in the minutes that got corrected. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        At the meeting held prior to the regular meeting, Joe Ricciardi gave a report of the latest

events. Joe had made a calendar of tournaments and other events.  However, we had to change the Kids’ Bluefish Tournament

from May 23 to May 16.  Our club will have it’s first bluefish tournament on the 23rd, which happens to be Memorial Day

weekend. Also, discussion about the open tournament in which the entry fee will be $75 per boat.  The cost will include a

barbeque at JW restaurant on Faunce Landing Road.

GACF:                                                 No report.

TOURNAMENTS:                              The open tournament has been moved to June 27.  Our tournaments will no longer

include weakfish entries.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  The Atlantic County Federation Annual Venison Dinner held on February 17, tickets

$40 at the door.  The Federation will hold its annual youth shoot at Red wing Sporting Clays; no date was mentioned.  Regarding

the annual dinner, John Zarych will pay for the shotgun, which will be auctioned off at the dinner.  He is also paying for the cost

of printing the tickets for the dinner.  At the dinner they will also have a better sound system for the evening.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                  No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                    Joe Ricciardi and Lou Schott attended the first HOFNOD meeting of the year at

Forsythe refuge. Our club has always been involved in this.  Some of our members will be needed to run a table and display regarding AFE handling and conservation of fish. We also need to help kids record their fish and help bait fishing poles, etc.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Dave Holmes stated that the website has not been updated since 2018.

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Post Office box bill, request for donation from RFA.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:              A previous member, Dave Roesch, rejoined the club. We also welcome new members Bob Fenton and Scott Van Daley.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                 Lou Schott gave a report on the awards/installation dinner.  57 people in attendance. A

plaque and gift certificate were presented to outgoing president Jim Van Daley. Also, a lifetime membership certificate was

presented to him and to past president Jim Sykes.  Awards were as follows: Bluefish: heaviest Dave Burke, 1st place Brian

Will.  Weakfish: heaviest Dave Williams, 1st place Dave Williams, second Jeff Reese, third Brian Will.  Flounder:  heaviest

Ernie Kinsell, first place was a tie with Ernie Kinsell and Charlie Elwell.   Striper:  there were no weigh ins.   Perch:  Jeff

Reese.  Lou mentioned that next year’s dinner will start at 6 pm instead of 7, since the meal was not served until very late.   

NEW BUSINESS:                                Joe Ricciardi mentioned the boat show is coming up the end of this month.  Ed

Goldman mentioned the Absecon Creek fest will take place again this fall, and also that mayor Kim Dalton of Absecon is

working on trying to get dredging done on Absecon Bay. 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                   No report.

MINUTES

January 13, 2020

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the December 9, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        A brief meeting was held before the regular meeting.  Tournaments, the annual

schedule, budget, membership and other matters were touched on.  A meeting was scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on January 27 at

Seafarer Shop LTD.  Any member with suggestions for the coming year should contact a club officer including Lou Schott,

Dave Burke or Joe Ricciardi.

GACF:                                                 Ed Goldman reported that $11,222 was earned at the Chinese auction.  John Schwartz

resigned as auction chairman since he is moving to Florida.  The new chairman will be Ron Peterson. It was mentioned that

Carol Fries, a longtime volunteer with the GACF, will be moving to Virginia.  President Van Daley said she will be missed.   

TOURNAMENTS:                              A letter was received from the Sunshine Foundation indicating a change in leadership

and that the tournament date for this year will be July 11, 2020.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  The annual venison dinner will be held on Monday, February 17 (President’s Day) at

Holy Trinity Greek Church, EHT.  Donation is $35 or $40 after February 13.  Call 609-927-3857 for tickets.  This is a great

dinner and the main fund raiser for the Federation.        

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                  No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                    Jim Van Daley will no longer be involved with the organization or annual tournament. 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     Joe Ricciardi indicated that the two Facebook pages may be combined.

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Bank statement received.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:              No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                 Lou Schott is taking reservations and accepting money for the Installation Dinner. 

Contact Lou ASAP with your reservation and dinner selection (609-742-2382).  The dinner will again be held at the Crab Trap

in Somers Point, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31.  See the dinner announcement for details.  This is a great event

and we will be honoring past president Jim Van Daley.

NEW BUSINESS:                                A suggestion was made to follow the Absecon City affairs more closely.  Council

meetings are televised.
