ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

October 14, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the September 23, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:    

TRUSTEES:                                        Lou Schott opened up the discussion regarding the changes in the bylaws.  The

changes were discussed but President Van Daley mentioned that there has to be a change in article x regarding

dissolution.  Since we are a 501c3 any assets must be given to any organization provided it is a 501c3.  With that change,

a motion was made to pass the changes in the bylaws and it passed unanimously except for one nay from President Van

Daley since he was still hoping for a President to run the club.  At that point, nominations were opened from the floor.

Charlie Elwell nominated Joe Ricciardi, Dave Burke nominated Lou Schott, John Reese nominated Dave Burke. Charlie

Elwell was nominated for Treasurer, Bob Cusack was nominated for Secretary, John Reese was nominated for Sargent at

Arms.  Recording Secretary—no nominations. 

GACF:                                                 The meeting will be held on September 23.

TOURNAMENTS:                              There is only one perch entry at this point.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                  Dave Burke reported that, so far, the bow season for deer has been very good

with over 8,000 deer killed to date.  The state fish and wildlife is installing new a new computer system so the system will

be unavailable to use until Thursday September 17.  The federation also discussed the NJOA fund raiser clay bird shoot at

Red Wing on October 7.  They made a profit of over $10,000.  The NJ. bear season is starting and Governor Murphy has

still excluded all state lands from bear hunting.  Also, the division of fish and wildlife is now hiring additional (5)

conservation officers along with other staff people.

NEW BUSINESS:                                Lou Schott brought up an email he received from bob cusack regarding sending

out thank yours and photos of the Day on the Bay event.  It was decided to hold them until applications for the 2020 open

tournament are sent out and then include them.  The Atlantic County Federation requested a $100 donation from us for the

youth shoot to be held at Red Wing on March 14.  It was decided to hold off on that request until the new board convenes

in January and sets a budget.

September 23, 2019 Meeting

September 23, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President Lou Schott, President Jim Van Daley was not present, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the September 9, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:     

TRUSTEES:                                        Joe Ricciardi reported on the 2 meetings that the officers and trustees had regarding a change in the club format.  The meetings were held September 16 and September 23, prior to the regular membership meeting.  The bylaws are in the process of being rewritten using 3 officers to serve equally as President.  The three officers would be voted on by the membership including the positions of treasurer, secretary, corresponding secretary, and sergeant at arms.  The general membership would vote on the bylaw changes at the October meeting and at that meeting there would also be nominations for the various positions.  The board would then have a meeting in January to discuss the budget, direction of club, and committees.  Lou Schott then read an email that was sent to all members dated Sept 20 that indicated the process of the changes by the board.                            

GACF:                                                 Ed Goldman mentioned the Chinese auction to be held in October at the Eagleswood fire house.  He also mentioned they are still trying to work out details to have a one-month fishing derby in 2020 to raise funds. 

TOURNAMENTS:                               No report.

SUNSHINE:                                        No one reported sick.

FEDERATION:                                   Dave Burke reported that most of the meeting was discussion about hunting. Part of the discussion was about the annual deer hunt at the FAA Tech Center.  They also discussed the NJOA sporting clays shoot at Redwing on October 5.   

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                   No report. 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                     No report.

NEW BUSINESS:                                The installation dinner was brought up and it was agreed to have it again at the Crab Trap.  The price may have to be increased if the Crab Trap raises their prices.

September 9, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the August 26, 2019 meeting were read and approved.    The treasurer’s report was read and approved.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      No report.

GACF:                                                Nothing new, meeting scheduled September 18.

TOURNAMENTS:                            No new weigh-in slips for perch or striper.

SUNSHINE:                                       Dr. John Glassy is fighting cancer.  Need to send him a card from the club.  Frank Elbertson is doing OK but still fighting cancer.

FEDERATION:                                 There will be a meeting on September 13.   

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                Lou went to the last meeting and there were 3 options for 2020 striper: 1 – no change; 2 -18% commercial, -20% residential; 3 -1.8 % commercial, -18 % residential.  Meeting to discuss will be held September 14. 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  No report.

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Bank statements. Renew charity registration. Tickets to Jersey Shore boat show. 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               The Day on the Bay was a success. Lots of fish were caught and the kids had a great time.  BBQ was good and medals were presented to all the kids. Dave will contact Jen Price to get pictures. All T-Shirt and Raffle money is in.

NEW BUSINESS:                              None.

PICNIC:                                              Lou gave a report. Around 65 people attended.  The food was great and the music was good.  It was suggested that 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons be put in front of the winning desserts. Ran out of soda, water, & eggs to bread the fish.

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

August 26, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by President Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Minutes from the August 12, 2019 meeting were read and approved with two corrections:  President Van Daley presided over the meeting, not Lou Schott.  Also, the GACF auction will be held at Eaglewood Fire Station, not Eaglewood Landing.   The treasurer’s report was not available.   

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                       No report.

GACF:                                                Ed Goldman advised that the state of NJ now allows organizations to

auction off alcohol, so they will do so.  Ed also reported that the GACF is considering a fishing derby for stripers and bluefish in the month of June.  They are considering using overall length instead of weight.  

TOURNAMENTS:                             No report.

SUNSHINE:                                        Steve Pinkus had spine surgery, and is recuperating at Betty Bacharach for

at least two more weeks; Frank Elbertson is fighting lung cancer.

FEDERATION:                                  Off for the summer but will have a meeting in September.   

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                There will be an open-to-the-public meeting at the Ocean City Library

on Wednesday, September 4 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  No report.

PICNIC:                                              Lou Schott reported that picnic plans are progressing.  Brian Smallwood will again provide music.  Food and beverages will be purchased next week. Crab cleaning will take place on Saturday, September 7 at Andersons on Oyster Creek.  Members are needed to help to set up picnic tables at the Cologne Fire House on Saturday at 6 PM.

GACF:                                               There will be a meeting next Wednesday. Chinese auction was moved to Eagles Landing firehouse on November 2. 

TOURNAMENTS:                          Results from the open and fourth in house results were read. Discussed moving the open tournament to June, as this year was very hot and may have deterred folks from entering.  Also discussed lowering the weakfish and bluefish sizes, and possibly charge $25-30 for each person fishing on boat.

SUNSHINE:                                     No report.

FEDERATION:                               No report.      

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:            Jim attended the NJMF meeting.

HOOKED ON FISHING:              No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:              Need to post the picnic.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:            One new application, Josh Tassone.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                Discussed ending In-House tournaments at 3:30 and starting at sunrise. Discussed having a perch tournament. The club decided to enter a boat in the Sunshine tournament and Jim is going to attend their weigh-in. Open Tournament: any donation over $60 will get a T-shirt.  Lou picked up the T-shirts and Charlie picked up the coolers. Fisherman magazine posted the open tournament.  Discussed increasing the price of T-shirt to $15. Tiebreak rules- 1st tie breaker is length and 2nd is earliest weigh-in.

NEW BUSINESS:                               Will have a booth at the 4-H Fair but raffle tickets will not be sold.

PICNIC                                              Lou will secure the site.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 There is a upcoming Sea Craft party.  There is talk that the State/Feds will shut down Striped Bass.

ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

JUNE 24, 2019

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops with President Jim Van Daley presiding.

MINUTES:  The minutes of June 11, 2019 were not available, a motion was made, seconded and passed to forego approving the minutes of June 11th.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  The Treasurer’s report was read and approved. 

COMMUNICATIONS:  A letter from the IRS was received asking charities to take a survey, another letter was received from the state reminding us that our annual report is due by August 31 and an ad from State Farm Insurance.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP:  None

COMMITTEE REPORTS

GACF – Working on the November Gift Auction and hopefully will have the Fishing Derby ready to go for next year.

TOURNAMENTS – Caught up for now, next tournament 7/6. Open 7/20 and last in-house 8/10.  Jim Van Daley noted that they Pleasantville Yacht Club ran a tournament with 89 participants.  Joe Ricciardi has been putting out signs and fliers for the Open Tournament.  He needs items for the captain’s bags.  Jim Van Daley and Lou Schott have talked to the Pitney Tavern and they will provide the food for $1,000.00 not matter how many people.  The t-shirts sponsors are still being worked on.  The sponsors from last year have all committed for this year.  ACE Hardware will be a new sponsor.  The Federation donated $200.00 and their logo will go on the sleeve.  Joe Ricciardi will have the tournament rules ready and Charlie Elwell has purchased the coolers for prizes.  Door prizes are needed.  Ed Goldman mentioned the PYC tournament had a prize for the person who caught a fluke closest to a predetermined weight.

FEDERATION:  No meeting until September.

MARINE FISHERIES COUNCIL:  Will meet July 11th at the County Library located on Jimmie Leeds Rd. at 5:00pm.

HOOKED ON FISHING:  Jim Van Daley asked who had the sponsor list for the Kids’ Tournament as we need to send thank you notes to the sponsors.  Dave Burke will check with Mary Ann at Chestnut Neck.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:  Rich Oeser reported that he still has plenty of tickets that need to be sold.

NEW BUSINESS: Jim Van Daley asked if the members wanted to have a booth at this year’s 4H Fair.  Didn’t appear to be much interest.  Joe Ricciardi asked about the Galloway Night Out; Jim will check with the Chief of Police.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:  Jim Van Daley announced that the Sunshine Tournament out of Little Egg Harbor will be held on July 13th;  The Captain’s meeting will be held on July 12th at the Little Egg Harbor American Legion.  He also reported that he attended the Pole Cat Tournament and handed out flyers for our open.

GACF:                                                They are still talking about various ways to fund-raise.  Harry Moran volunteered to find ways to do this.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               President Van Daley asked about raffle tickets.  Still have most of them for sale.  President Van Daley and Lou Schott have to see BJ about Pitney Pub for the open tournament.  Kids’ bluefish tournament was a big success with 53 kids entered.  There were a lot of volunteers and lots of food and door prizes.  The weather was perfect.  Dave Burke wrote articles for the Fisherman magazine and the Federation newspaper and both were published.  President Van Daley discussed, in detail, the upcoming open tournament on July 20.   Items covered additional flyers needed, t-shirts, door prizes, and discussion with BJ re Pitney Pub use.

NEW BUSINESS:                              No report.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 Lou Schott mentioned that he, Dave Burke, Rich Oeser, Jack Herman, Bob Zussman and he chartered a boat out of Beach Haven for Seabass.  Over 200 fish were caught, 20 keepers.  The weather, the boat, the captain, and the mate were terrific.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:  

TRUSTEES:                                      No report.

GACF:                                                There will be a meeting on May 15.

TOURNAMENTS:                            First in-house tournament is on May 25. Only 8 boats have signed up so far and it needs 10. The Patriot Lake fishing tournament was a good time. 65 kids participated and lots of fish were caught.   Pomona Hunting Club is having its fishing tournament on the same day as our second in-house.

SUNSHINE:                                       No report.

FEDERATION:                                 No report.      

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                Will be at the Kids’ bluefish tournament.                                     

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  Need volunteers for the Kids bluefish tournament. Meet at 9:30 to stuff bags.  Need to get grill and tables. Also get gift certificates from Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen and Chestnut Neck. Per President Van Daley, any 401C organization can have a table at the 4H fair in August to hand out flyers but cannot sell anything. The club should look into this.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                  Need to put kids bluefish tournament photos on Website and Facebook.

COMMUNICATIONS:                     Received thank you from Scott Shears for his father. Look at Charity Navigator web site. 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               Need to order T-shirts for open tournament and solicit sponsors for door prizes and T-shirts.

NEW BUSINESS:                              Need to work with Pitney Pub on open BBQ arrangements.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 Viking is now making a center console boat.  Outboard motors are now available with 400 & 450 HP.

April 22, 2019

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President Lou Schott with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence.  Lou asked if everyone had read the minutes. They had, so a motion was made to accept them.  The treasurer’s report was read and accepted.   Account balances:

GACF:                                                They will not have a fishing tournament this year.  They are trying to determine other ways to raise money.

TOURNAMENTS:                            To date, 8 boats are signed up for the in-house tournaments.  The fluke season will be 5/24 to 9/21, with the limit being 3 fluke at 18 inches each.   

SUNSHINE:                                       No report.

FEDERATION:                                 No report.      

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                No report.                                     

HOOKED ON FISHING:                  Volunteers are needed atPatriot Lake “Hooked on Fishing” on May 11 and for the Kids’ Bluefish Tournament on May 18 at Chestnut Neck.  

President Van Daley arrived and continued the meeting.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:           No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:               Joe Ricciardi is working on the May 4 Absecon Sportsmen Show on

Pitney Road.  Some members have volunteered to help Joe: Ed Goldman, Rich Oeser, Lou Schott.  We will have a table, a display of eels, our applications for membership and a display of various fishing rigs.    

NEW BUSINESS:                              Chris Pezka finished the kids display for first and second place in the bluefish tournament.  He also made donations to the kids and open tournaments.                                                        

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                 Lou Schott brought up that John, Jeff and Hunter Reese came in second place in the Landisville Perch Tournament.
