ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

July 9, 2017

 

The meeting was brought to order by President, Jim Van Daley with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the June 25 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report were read and approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                     No report.

 

GACF:                                               Joe reported that 23 boats entered the tournament. The food afterwards was good and everyone had a good time. There was a Chinse auction.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                          Door prizes are coming in for the open tournament; need to add Smithville Barber shop. We will be cooking our own corn at the BBQ afterwards. Still need to finalize with Pitney Pub. Plan to have a prize for the non-winners. Need to make sure we get the ASWS Logo added to the Sunshine foundation Add book next year. Next In-house is July 21.

 

SUNSHINE:                                      Elmer Fredd’s daughter passed. Jack Petro passed and Lou sent Janet a card

 

FEDERATION:                                The Federation newsletter had the Kids Bluefish tournament and our open tournament listed.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:              No report.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                Need to post kids bluefish tournament.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                   Received bank statements and some open entry fees.

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:         No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:             Elks Club is set for the FOD kids fishing BBQ.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                             GABT has two Phillies tickets on July 25, which is raffling.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:               Joe caught a fish. Lou and Charlie may also have caught some fish.

June 25, 2017

 

The meeting was brought to order by Vice President, Lou Schott with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the June 11 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was not available.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              Joe Ricciardi submiited that the  annual tournament , which has been                                                                                                         renamed in honor of John Dunn, is            scheduled for June 29. See                                                                                                         http://gacf.org/docs/2018/Entry_Form.pdf for flyer and entry form. Scott’s Dock                                                                                          has been added as a weigh-in station.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                        In house tournament results to date are on the website and will be included in                                                                                        the meeting minutes. The next tournament is on July 21st. The signs for the open                                                                  tournament have been placed and the calcutta will be increased to $20.00.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Gary Shreeves (Scott’s father) had a stroke and is out of the hospital now. Guy                                                                                         Wilkins is recovering from a surgery as is his youger brother, Ed.

 

FEDERATION:                                     No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           Meeting will be held in Ocean City and Toms River on June 27th and 28th with regard to tranfering some of the recreational Bluefish quota to commercial fishermen.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             It was pointed out that the re are still areas of the website that need to be updated.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 We received a thank you letter from the Fish and Wildlife Service

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                      No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          Raffle tickets are still being sold.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                           An email will be sent to the membership containing links to sites with informatinabout the Modern fish Act. Plans for the club picnic began with an emphasis on filling in for John Reese’s anticipated absense to accomplish the many tasks that he has been performing for the club that have been such a large part of the picnic’s successs all these years. Joe Fumo has been informed that the Field of Dreams Fishing Trip will be held on August 20th this year.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Joe caught a fish. Lou and Charlie may also have caught some fish.

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             The kids’ bluefish tournament held at Chestnut Neck was a big success with big turnout.

                                                                           Jim realized late that he had a $150 check toward prizes but will use it next year instead.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             Posted Patriot Lake perch tournament pictures.   Need bluefish tournament photos from Dave Holmes.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 Received bank statements and a thank you from GACF; Field of Dreams is requesting donations.  Request for donation from a Rutgers’ student was denied (charity budget is low).

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                      New member application received and approved from Doug Keeping.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          Raffle tickets still being sold.  Plaque for Fisherman of the Year was updated.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                           Looking into add second place awards to Perch and Striper tournament to entice more entries.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Pomona Gun Club had 25 boats and 60 anglers registered for their tournament last weekend. Their 50/50 was $800.

OPEN TOURNAMENT:                Jim Van Daley purchased stickers to update tournament signs with this year’s dates.

 

Need to line up T-Shirt Sponsors.

 

Door prizes need to be collected, and retailers assigned to member volunteers.

 

Discussed a possibility of a Calcutta for Sea Robin.

 

Discussed possibility for $500 prize for the largest fish, although many felt $500 was too much and

that $100 or $250 was more appropriate.

 

Discussed possibility that all non-winners be entered into a drawing for a cash or prize award.

 

Jim stated that T-shirts will only be given to T-shirt sponsors, not door prize donors.

 

Talked to Ocean County Sunshine Foundation to see if they will send our flyer to their captains’ list and vice versa.

 

Discussed a second Calcutta for more money to attract additional interest and possibly “high roller” anglers.

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the April 23 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                        No report.

 

GACF:                                                                   Tournament on June 30, still very little details. There is a meeting on Wednesday where more details should be available.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                             A 3.8 Lb. perch was entered by Jeff Reese in the yearlong tournament..

 

SUNSHINE:                                                         Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.  Brian Will is doing well after his shoulder operation.

 

FEDERATION:                                                  Reported deer kill was up this past season.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                              The Governor approved Sea Bass opening day, one day before it opened.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                                10 fishing poles were donated for the kids’ Bluefish tournament.  Fishing poles donated last year will be given out.  Need volunteers to show up on Friday to stuff Sea Tow bags and Saturday for the tournament. T-Shirts are ready to be picked up.  Lou will purchase soda and water. Need to purchase stud from Absecon Sportsmen center and Chestnut Neck Boatyard to put in bags.

                                                                                Not as many volunteers showed up for the Patriot Lake Perch tournament.  About 50 kids were in the tournament.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                                Need to post Patriot Lake Perch tournament pictures.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                     Received GABT raffle tickets and passed all of them out. Received Dues and Bank Statements.  RFA is looking for donations.

 

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                         No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                             Raffle tickets are in and Rich Oeser volunteered to manage to distribution and money collection.  Open tournament signs need to be updated and distributed. Joe volunteered to put one quickly at the FOD field.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                                              Joe is updating Membership application with current businesses giving discounts to club members.

 

 

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                               Absecon Sportsmen Center is having a customer appreciation sale this weekend.

April 23, 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the April 9 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was not available.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              The GACF has been discussing a joint fishing tournament with the LIBT.  Not all the details are worked out but it will be a boat/shore/kayak tournament with winners in each division and separate entry fees as well.  The tournament will be held on June 30 as a one-day event, meaning the prizes will be awarded the same day.   Contestants will fish for striped bass, bluefish and flounder.  The GACF has coupons for sale at $5.00 which will give 25% off any purchase at Boscov’s on October 16.  The GACF also had raffle tickets at $5.00 each or 5 for $20.  The drawing will be June 3.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                         No report.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.  Brian Will had a shoulder operation last week.

 

FEDERATION:                                              We requested $200 for the kids’ bluefish tournament.  They gave us $300 since they had made a good profit from the annual venison dinner.   There were some critiques about the dinner but they will be corrected.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           No report.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             May 12 at Patriot Lake, we are looking for volunteers.   May 19 kids’ bluefish tournament, we have about 50 t-shirts and will purchase 50 more.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          No report on the raffle since Mr. Elwell was not present.

 

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            May 5 is the “Sneaky Hollow Perch Tournament” at $25.00 per person.  Landisville had their big perch tournament on April 21; $1100 was the prize for the biggest perch. They also had a raffle for a boat, motor, and trailer.  The heaviest 5 fish only weighed a total of 5.05 pounds.   The single largest was 1.65 pounds.  The Yeti cooler company broke their ties with the NRA.  There is also a new fishing club in the area per Joe Ricciardi.  It is called the Atlantic City Saltwater Anglers.

April 9, 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops.  The minutes of the March 12 meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                                    No report.

 

GACF:                                                              A fundraiser dinner was held at the Pleasantville Yacht Club on Saturday, April 7th.  It was a great success, well attended with very good food and good entertainment.  Our club was well represented with 8 members and their guests.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                                         There are 5 members signed up for all four tournaments so far.  The calendars are out showing the dates of the tournaments.  Cost is $120 to enter all 4 tournaments.  Our striper and perch yearly contests are open. No entries yet on them.

 

SUNSHINE:                                                    Bill Will is still being tested to find out what is wrong with him.

Brian Will had a shoulder operation last week.

 

FEDERATION:                                              No report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                           The fluke season for 2018 is similar to last year, 3 fish at 18 inches, from May 25 to Sept 22.  The seabass regulations were set but New York State is making an attempt to grab some of our quota.  More hearings on that.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                             Will be held at Patriot Lake in Galloway on May 12.   Kids bluefish Tournament on May 19.  State of NJ will be at the weigh-in for the purpose of bluefish research.  An announcement will be made in the state federation newspaper.  Lou Schott also mentioned that he emailed the flyers for the bluefish tournament and the open tournament to the Fisherman magazine.

 

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                             No report.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                                 Received bank statement, dues, and a notice from the LIBT that they will be having a fishing tournament sometime in June; date to be determined.

 

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS:                      No new applications.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                          50 members have paid their dues so far.  Also, our raffle license is still up in the air as city of Port Republic will vote on approving it April 10, then it must go to state for their approval.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                            Rich Oesser mentioned that the Pomona Gun Club will be having their fluke tournament on June 9, the same date as ours.

March 12, 2018

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the February 12 meeting were read with one correction, the hooked on fishing date is May 12 and not May 5. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

 

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                                        A meeting was held at Jim Van Daley’s home on February 26.  The budget was reviewed and approved by the board.  There is a surplus in the charity acct of $474 and there is a deficit in the general acct of $480.  The board also set up the dates for the club tournaments as well as the day on the bay for the kids.  A calendar will be made up and mailed out to all members.

 

GACF:                                                 Ed Goldman mentioned that they had a booth at the Atlantic City boat show and

that tickets were sold.  The GACF will be holding a fund-raiser dinner, open to the public, on April 7 at the Pleasantville Yacht Club; cost is $25.00 per person. Also, there will be an ACE Hardware fundraiser in May.

 

TOURNAMENTS:                              No report.

 

SUNSHINE:                                        John Reese reported that Bill Will is sick.  The Club will send him a card.

FEDERATION:                                   The youth shoot will be held on Saturday, March 17 at Red Wing Sporting Clays in Port Republic.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:                  They will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 15th in Manahawkin.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:                    No report.

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:                     No report.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:                        Received bank statement and license for the fish scale.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:                 The raffle situation is ongoing.  Before tickets can be printed, the lottery number is needed and it has not been received as yet.  This is “Pay Day for Labor Day.”

GOOD OF THE ORDER:                   Lou Schott gave out flyers to those in attendance regarding the GACF dinner that

will be held on April 7.  He would like a table of members to represent our Club.

February 12, 2018

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the January 15 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Meeting set for February 26 at 7 pm at Jim Van Daley’s house.

GACF: Will have a raffle this year and will be at the boat show. They are in discussion
with the Ladies Bluefish tournament to perhaps have a combined fishing
tournament of some kind; details have to be worked out.

TOURNAMENTS: Joe King was given a plaque for catching the largest striper, he was unable to
attend the fishing club banquet.

SUNSHINE: It was mentioned that past president John Dunn had passed away. Some
of our members attended his viewing.

FEDERATION: Dave Burke mentioned that volunteers are needed to cut venison for the Federation dinner to be held on Monday, February 19th at the Port Republic Gun Club at 8 am. Also, on March 17 the Federation will hold its annual youth shoot at Red Wing Sporting Clays. There was discussion about allowing the fish and game council to set hunting and fishing fees rather than the present system of passing the state legislature. There was also discussion about the state Marine Fisheries moving out of the Nacote Creek property which is part of the federal wildlife refuge. They would move to a school building in Green Bank.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING: Will be held at Patriot Lake, Galloway, on Saturday, May 5.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: The installation dinner photos are posted on our website.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statement received as well as free tickets to boat show to be held in Edison
February 15-18.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Lou discussed the installation dinner at the Crab Trap and how well it went. 54 people were in attendance. Charles Elwell said notices will be going out to anyone who has not paid their dues by now. There was discussion about our annual raffle. Dave Holmes brought up an idea to have the drawing at the Brigantine Elks lodge at the Day on the Bay event but President Van Daley said that can’t be done since the raffle must be held in the community where the permit is drawn. President Van Daley decided to call the raffle “vacation pay day” and to hold the drawing at our open tournament in July.

NEW BUSINESS: May 19 is the kids’ bluefish tournament. The open tournament will be held July 14 at Pitney Pub and the captains meeting Friday night the 13th, also at the Pitney Pub.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: John Zarach, club member, will be running for Congress on the Republican
ticket since Congressman LoBiondo will be retiring. Dave Holmes
mentioned that the north end of Brigantine beaches will now be controlled by
the state of New Jersey with new regulations and additional fees.

January 15, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the December 11 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: The annual meeting will be set at the next general meeting.

GACF: No report.

SUNSHINE: Harry Walker’s son has terminal liver cancer. Lou Schott will send a card.

FEDERATION: All the information was restated about the annual dinner to be held on Presidents’ Day. It will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church in Egg Harbor Township. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: The January Marine Fisheries Council meeting was rescheduled and relocated due to the weather and driving conditions in Galloway Township. It was held on January 11 at the Stafford Township Municipal Building, 260 East Bay Avenue, Manahawkin, NJ 08050

HOOKED ON FISHING: No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: It was pointed out that the treasury report dollar amounts should not be posted on the website and President Van Daly so instructed that the dollar amounts will not be posted in public view.

COMMUNICATIONS: Received bank statements and State Farm junk mail.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Lou gave a brief yet complete rundown about the annual installment dinner for the new members present. Hors d’oeuvres will begin at 7:00 PM and dinner at 8:00 PM. Dave Holmes will photograph the dinner. The Fisherman of the Year plaque is at Shoppe’s being updated.

NEW BUSINESS: The A.C. Boat Show will be held February 28th through March 4th at the Atlantic City Convention Center. All bills for the 2017 calendar year have been paid. In-house tournaments are over and all slips are in. It is dues and roster time.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: The Southern Ocean County Chapter of the Sunshine Foundation will hold a Fishing Flea Market on February 3rd at 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Little Egg Harbor Community Center. FEDERATION                           All the information was restated about the annual dinner to be held on

President’s day.  It will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church in Egg Harbor

Township.   Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:        They will hold a January meeting to primarily discuss black sea bass quotas.

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:          No report.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:       A thank you note was sent to Chris Pezka for his donation of a model

Barnegat bay sneak box to be used as a door prize for the installation

dinner.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                      Lou was asked to send a sympathy card to Ron Famularo whose wife just

passed away. Lou Schott announced that the annual installation dinner would

again be held at the Crab Trap on February 2, 2018.

 

NOMINATIONS:                      There had been no changes in the nominations for officers or trustees so there

was a motion on the floor by Ed Goldman and seconded with a unanimous

vote to accept the current slate of officers and trustees.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:        No discussion.
