Meeting of July 22, 2013

The meeting of the Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen was called to order by President Jim Van Daley. The club performed the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our Military.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the July 8, 2013 meeting were read and approved.

Trustee Report: Nothing to report.

G.A.C.F. Report: Not much going on. The club will be at the Absecon National night out on August 6.

In House Tournament: The 4th in-house tournament is scheduled for August 10.

Open Tournament: The tournament went well despite a reduction in boats. There was enough raised to take the kids from Field of Dreams on a fishing trip this summer.

Sunshine: Peggy Schott is doing better and so is Ernie Kinsel.

Club Picnic: Scheduled for September 8th. There will be a $5 per person increase. John Reese will be contacting the EHC lake personal to arrange for the day. Need to update the flyer for the dessert contest.

Atlantic County Federation: Nothing to report.

NJ Marine Fisheries: The council decided to increase the flounder season by 8 days.

Field of Dreams: The “Day on the Bay” is scheduled for August 12. The boat will leave between 12:30 and 1PM.

Hooked on Fishing: Nothing to report.

ASWS Web Site/Facebook: Will be adding the “Day on the Bay” event.

G.A.C.F. Report: Next meeting on the 17th. The Chinese auction is scheduled for October 19.

New Business: The NJ chapter of the RFA is trying to solicit local clubs in a “what can we do for you and return”

We discussed the in house tournament rule for substitution when a paying member cannot fish the tournament. It was decided that another club member could fish for him but points would go to the paying member.

Good of the Order: John Reese reported croakers are being caught in the Mullica river.
Both Bob Zussman as a Veteran and Honey & Sweets as NJ farm fresh were in the Smithville 4th of July parade.

G.A.C.F. Report: Only one bluefish was weighed in for the GABT tournament. John Reese was the winner with a 2.05 lb. Bluefish. Forty boats signed up for the tournament. Planning for the Chinese auction on October 19th.

In House Tournament: The 2nd in-house tournament is scheduled for June 22. Results of the 1st tournament:

Hooked on Fishing: There were about 45 kids entered in the Nuncio Bruno Bluefish tournament held at Chestnut Neck boatyard. There were lots of fish weighed in and door prizes handed out.

The Mayors column from a recent current indicated the DEP would be dredging the Absecon Bay Channel sometime in mid-July. The Mayor thanked the ASWS club for their efforts to get this project going.

Good of the Order: The RFA tournament was held last Sunday, 35 boats had entered and the winner caught a 6 lb. Flounder.
We thanked the members who helped out with the Nuncio Bruno Kids Tournament and a special thanks to Janet and Jack.

G.A.C.F. Report: Early entry for the GABT tournament ends on May 15th. The tournament is scheduled for June 1, 2013.

In House Tournament: One Press of AC weigh in slip received for 1lb 15 oz. Perch. The 1st in-house tournament is scheduled for May 25, 2013.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: Steve Pinkus had a heart attack and is recovering well. The club will send get well card. Ernie Kinsell is sick. Mike Sheehan had a heart attack and is recovering well.

Club Picnic: Nothing to report.

Atlantic County Federation: Nothing to report.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Sea Bass season opens on May 19. At last meeting there was a discussion to shut down the season on eel.

Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

Hooked on Fishing: There were 137 kids that showed up at Patriot Lake for the tournament. T-storms forced to cancel the tournament and Fly fishing demonstration. Prizes will be used at next year’s tournament.

New Applications: Two new applicants were approved, Paul Stonerod & John Navratil.

Unfinished Business: The Nuncio Bruno kids Bluefish tournament is this Saturday at Chestnut Neck boatyard. The T-shirts and Seatow banner are ready. There were many door prizes donated. Volunteers from the club will meet around 9 AM.

Ed will have the membership cards made as soon as Charlie provides the list.

Jim plans to follow up on the design and printing of club business cards.

Installation Dinner: Nothing to report.

New Business: Ed and Joe meet with Mike Shepard on his radio show (1400 AM) on May 11. Ed talked about the GABT activities and Joe talked about ASWS activities.

Jim made a motion to send $200 to the family of the Sea Tow Captain that was killed in a boating accident a couple weeks ago. The motion was approved.

The location for the In-House tournament weigh-in was moved to Up the Creek marina on Faunce Landing road. Dave will supply adult beverage.

There was a motion to send a letter to the Mayor of Absecon to help speed up the Absecon channel dredging project. Motion was approved and Ed will write the letter.

Joe announced that the new sign is up at the Absecon boat ramp with information like tide charts.

A new flyer is needed for the clubs open tournament.

Elections: Nothing to report.

Good of the Order: The Absecon Bay Sportsmen center will give away free gift certificates for winners of the open day flounder.
Jim announced that a couple kids that worked with him last summer are do very well in their crew tournaments.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the January 14, 2013 meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer’s Report: General Account: N/A Charity Account: N/A

Trustee Report: Trustees met at Jim Van Daley’s house on February 21 primarily to review budget. The budget was agreed upon. Some of the dates were selected for tournaments, including kids’ Bluefish tournament, the kids’ Bluefish tournament will be increased to $10.00 from $5.00.

G.A.C.F. (Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund, formerly GABT) Report: The meeting was cancelled for February due to lack of attendance.

In House Tournament: Nothing to report.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: No report of anyone sick.

Club Picnic: Nothing to report.

Atlantic County Federation: The youth shoot will be held on March 16. The Federation dinner was held at Kerry-Brooke on February 18. The attendance and dinner were good. The 50/50 was $1850.00.

NJ Marine Fisheries: The fluke season was introduced with a shortened season, will run from May 18th to September 16th, with the same size length and 5 fish per day.

Hooked on Fishing: The kids’ Bluefish tournament is scheduled for May 18.

Unfinished Business: The speaker on April 21 at the Brigantine meeting will be Captain Mike Cerelli regarding the Jersey Shore beach and boat tournament.

New Business: Joe Ricciardi is working on printing new applications and calendar of events. Charles Elwell reminded everyone that the dues are now past due. A date to remember is May 11 for the Patriot Lake fishing tournament. Just show up if you wish to volunteer. Ed Goldman reported that Bob Cusack received an email from Lloyd at the ACUA in reference to the watershed stream assessment program. He will be contacted to try to get him as an additional speaker for the April meeting. Following is the list of tournaments: May 25, June 22, July 8, July 20 open tournament, Aug 10. There will be only one membership meeting in May due to Memorial Day conflict. The Sneaky Hollow Perch tournament will take place on April 27.

Trustee Report: Meeting to be held 7:30 on February 21 at Jim Van Daley’s house.

G.A.B.T Report: The GABT is changing its name to GACF (Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund). The GABT tournament name is not changing. There is a meeting scheduled for February 20.

In House Tournament: Perch and Striper are ongoing. The price for each tournament is $35 or $120 for all four tournaments

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: No report of anyone sick.

Club Picnic: Nothing to report.

Atlantic County Federation: Jim has tickets for the Federation Dinner to be held on February 18. The price is $30. Jim’s phone # is 748-8208. There is a meeting scheduled for February 14.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Flounder limits and season will be decided at the March meeting.

Hooked on Fishing: The kids Bluefish tournament is scheduled for May 18.

Web Site & Facebook: Received a email from the Westwood Youth Group asking the club to put a link to their website on our web page. The club agreed and Bob will look into it.

Unfinished Business: We have our annual “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle tickets available. The cost is only $5.00 per ticket this year. Every member should purchase or sell some tickets at that price. Call Charles Elwell (412-2264) or Lou Schott (742-2382) for tickets. Each ticket must be accounted for and all unsold tickets must be returned and kept by the club. Let’s make this a good year for ticket sales at this reduced price!

Installation Dinner: Lou Schott reported on the cost for the Installation dinner. There were 41 people who attended. The cost to the club was a little high so the price of the ticket may go up next year.

New Business: The ASWS April meeting will be held at the Elks club in Brigantine. The club is looking for a guest speaker.

Jim talked about the Beach & Boat tournament which runs from 4/1 to 11/30. The prize money for this tournament is very good.

Need to mail the open tournament flyer to Boating World.

There was a discussion about a bill that would move Dept. of Wildlife to the Dept. of Agriculture. The consensus was this bill would not be a good thing and we need more information.

Elections: Nothing to report.

Good of the Order: There was a Pro-Gun rally in Trenton last Friday. Pro-Gun groups are trying to get more people to attend the committee meeting. There was talk of email blast to committee members to prevent them for overreacting.

Federation: Jim Van Daley reported from the meeting of January 10. Jim has tickets for the Federation Dinner to be held on February 18. The price is $30. Jim’s phone # is 748-8208. The Federation needs volunteers to cut deer meat on Sunday, February 17. The youth sporting clays shoot at Red Wing will be held Saturday, March 16, at 9am. After the shoot , lunch will be provided by Port Gun Club at their club.

Installation Dinner: Lou Schott spoke, in detail, about the dinner, to be held at the Crab Trap on Feb 8. Dinner choices are, crab trap famous crab cakes, gulf golden fried shrimp, prime rib. Dinner price is the same as last year—$30.00. Seating is limited and there is a cutoff date so contact Lou early for reservations and choice (742-2382). A dinner flyer will be going out with the latest club minutes.

New Business: Dues bills will be going out. Dues are still $35, so you can send in your check early without waiting for the bill or you can pay them by separate check at the installation dinner on Feb 8. There will be a board meeting on Feb 21. The location is to be determined.

There was discussion between the president and secretary to transfer the money in the raffle account to the charity acct.

Good of the Order: It was brought up that a different night other than Monday for the club meetings might improve attendance. Your input is needed, so please contact Lou Schott, Jim Van Daley, or Charles Elwell to comment.

G.A.B.T Report: Next meeting will be held on December 19. The GABT is going to raffle a $1000 gift card. Ed told us of the prize he won at the Chinese auction where a gourmet cook came to his house and prepared a fantastic meal.

In House Tournament: Only one Perch and one striper entries for the year. Talk is not many larger Bass are around.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Federation: Next meeting is on December 13. Jim has tickets for the federation venison dinner which will be held on February 18, 2013. Please contact Jim if you want a ticket.

NJ Marine Fisheries: This week the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission are meeting to determine how fluke, sea bass, and bluefish would be managed for 2013.

New Business: Discussed a generic business card for the club, discussion will be ongoing.

Ed was in touch with the NJRFA and they asked what they can do to help our club. A couple suggestions were to provide a link from the NJRFA web site to the ASWS website, another was to educate us on what it is the NJRFA is chartered to perform.

There was an article in the Press about cities coping with flood prone areas. It mentioned that Absecon was applying for grants to develop the Kunkley property on Faunce Landing Rd. and the old swimming pool on Turner Ave.

G.A.B.T Report: The Chinese auction was held on Sat. October 6th and was a success. Over 400 gifts were given out and about $6,000 was raised.

In House Tournament: Perch and striper still open. Only 1 weigh slip for perch so far..

Open Tournament: We are waiting for the group picture from the “Day on the Bay” event before sending thank you letters to Sponsors and Captains.

Sunshine: Janet Petro is in the hospital. A card will be sent.

President Van Daley remarked that we still need to send thank-you letters to our sponsors and entrants from the open tournament as well as thank-you letters to for the Day on the Bay. He still has to contact Mr. Joe Brown who took a picture of the kids.
