Meeting of December 9, 2013

The meeting was called to order by President Jim Van Daley. The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our departed troops.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of November 11, 2013 were read and approved.

Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.

G.A.C.F. Report: Still not sure there will be a sponsor dinner this winter. Meeting next Wed. night, 12/18.
In House Tournament: Season long tournaments are coming to an end; 2 perch entries and 1 striper entry have been received.
Open Tournament: Nothing to report.
Sunshine: Steve Pinkos was in the hospital for bypass surgery. Ed sent him a card from the club.
Atlantic County Federation: The Federation dinner is coming up in February. Jim has several tickets available for this fantastic meal. Call him if you’re interested.
NJ Marine Fisheries: An upcoming meeting will decide if New York will get some of NJ’s fluke quota.

Installation Dinner: Lou Schott reported that the date for the Installation Dinner has been confirmed for 1/31/14 at the Crab Trap.

Lou needs to coordinate door prizes for the Installation dinner. Jim will be on vacation and unavailable to help out.

Lou will need to run the January meeting because of Jim being on vacation.

November 11, 2013 club meeting

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of September 23, 2013 were read and approved. There were no minutes from October (no meeting was held).

Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.

Trustee Report: No Report.
G.A.C.F. Report: Chinese Auction netted about $6,300.00. Meeting next Wed. night 11/20.
In House Tournament: 2 season long tournaments still ongoing, 2 perch entries have been received and no striper entries as of yet.
Open Tournament: Nothing to report.
Sunshine: Lou Schott was at the meeting and said he is doing well. Jerry Dinger was also at the meeting and is better.

Club Picnic: No report.
Atlantic County Federation: There will be a meeting on Thursday night.
NJ Marine Fisheries: It was reported that New York was trying to get some of NJ’s fluke quota.
Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

Jim Van Daley reported that he is working on the permit for the raffle and should have the tickets for the next meeting.

Ed Goldman reported that he still has to contact Typestries Sign & Design about a new banner. He also reported that the Fisherman magazine had done an article about the Field of Dreams and our “Day on the Bay”. A copy was email to the membership.

Installation Dinner: Lou Schott reported that the date for the Installation Dinner has been confirmed for 1/31/14 at the Crab Trap.

Jim Van Daley reported that he will have tickets for the Federation dinner at the next meeting. They are still $30.00 per person.

G.A.C.F. Report: The Chinese auction is scheduled for October 19. The chef is returning to provide a meal and a $100 gift card to purchase food. The raffle prizes will be the same as last year.

In House Tournament: Only the annual Perch and Striper tournaments are left.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: Bob Zussman is home.

Club Picnic: The dessert winners are:

Atlantic County Federation: Jim attended the meeting last week. The governor vetoes the gun bills. There are more pheasants this year due to new pens.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Flounder season closes on Tuesday. Possible 10% cut in quota for next year.

Hooked on Fishing: Nothing to report.

ASWS Web Site/Facebook: Bob will post the new main page of the website.

Unfinished Business: Jim will get the raffle application from the town of Port Republic and use Honey and Sweets farm stand as the address.

Installation Dinner: Lou will contact the Crab Trap and set the date for January 31.

New Business: The club banner was lost this year and the club needs to purchase a new one. Ed will contact Tapestry in Manahawkin.

Elections: Elections will be in November.

Good of the Order: There was an article on the club posted in Fisherman magazine. There is a rumor that Absecon post office may be closing and moving to Pleasantville. John Reese’s boat was shown in the Philadelphia Inquirer. National Geographic is doing an article on Mullica River Crab Co.

G.A.C.F. Report: A donation was made to Shore Memorial to use as scholarship money.

In House Tournament: Only the annual Perch and Striper tournaments are left.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: Bob Zussman is out of the hospital and is now in therapy.

Club Picnic: About 50 people attended the annual picnic which again was a success. The food was great and all had a good time. Lou reported that the picnic had made money this year. Need to check with Brian Will about making a donation to the Cologne Fire House.

Atlantic County Federation: Nothing to report.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Reported that the Fluke stocks are rebounding.

Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

Hooked on Fishing: Nothing to report.

ASWS Web Site/Facebook: Joe and Ed are working to update the web sites main page, some items are outdated. Bob will post it to the website when it’s ready.

Communication: Post Office bill was paid.

New Applications: No new applicants.

Unfinished Business: Joe reported that they are still waiting for a permit to deposit the spoils of the dredging.

Installation Dinner: Friday, January 31, 2014 was decided for next year’s dinner. Lou will contact the Crab Trap to secure that date. This date will not conflict with the Atlantic City Boat Show or Valentines’ Day, alleviating concerns from prior years’ events.

New Business: Need to start working on the annual raffle. The club will use Port Republic from where to run the raffle, as the permit process is easy and free.

Elections: Elections will be in November.

G.A.C.F. Report: At the last meeting, there was a discussion to have two Chinese auctions, one in Parkertown and a new one in Absecon. A decision was made to only have the one in Parkertown.

In House Tournament: Only the annual Perch and Striper tournaments are left.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: Bob Zussman is in the hospital. He is in good spirits and expects to get out next week.

Club Picnic: Lou provided an update. Because of our late request for EHC Lake, we could not get it. The picnic will be held at the Cologne Fire House instead. A meeting will be held to discuss the details of preparation and quantities of food items. Jim will bring corn, tomatoes, onions, and watermelon.

Atlantic County Federation: There will be a meeting September 12.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Nothing to report.

Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

G.A.C.F. Report: Not much going on. The club will be at the Absecon National night out on August 6.

In House Tournament: The 4th in-house tournament is scheduled for August 10.

Open Tournament: The tournament went well despite a reduction in boats. There was enough raised to take the kids from Field of Dreams on a fishing trip this summer.

Sunshine: Peggy Schott is doing better and so is Ernie Kinsel.

Club Picnic: Scheduled for September 8th. There will be a $5 per person increase. John Reese will be contacting the EHC lake personal to arrange for the day. Need to update the flyer for the dessert contest.

Atlantic County Federation: Nothing to report.

NJ Marine Fisheries: The council decided to increase the flounder season by 8 days.

Field of Dreams: The “Day on the Bay” is scheduled for August 12. The boat will leave between 12:30 and 1PM.

NJ Marine Fisheries: There will be a special meeting on 7/11 to discuss the extension of the Fluke season. The possibilities are 11, 6, or 0 days.

New Business: The NJ chapter of the RFA is trying to solicit local clubs in a “what can we do for you and return”

We discussed the in house tournament rule for substitution when a paying member cannot fish the tournament. It was decided that another club member could fish for him but points would go to the paying member.

Good of the Order: John Reese reported croakers are being caught in the Mullica river.
Both Bob Zussman as a Veteran and Honey & Sweets as NJ farm fresh were in the Smithville 4th of July parade.

G.A.C.F. Report: Only one bluefish was weighed in for the GABT tournament. John Reese was the winner with a 2.05 lb. Bluefish. Forty boats signed up for the tournament. Planning for the Chinese auction on October 19th.

In House Tournament: The 2nd in-house tournament is scheduled for June 22. Results of the 1st tournament:

Hooked on Fishing: There were about 45 kids entered in the Nuncio Bruno Bluefish tournament held at Chestnut Neck boatyard. There were lots of fish weighed in and door prizes handed out.

The Mayors column from a recent current indicated the DEP would be dredging the Absecon Bay Channel sometime in mid-July. The Mayor thanked the ASWS club for their efforts to get this project going.

Good of the Order: The RFA tournament was held last Sunday, 35 boats had entered and the winner caught a 6 lb. Flounder.

G.A.C.F. Report: Early entry for the GABT tournament ends on May 15th. The tournament is scheduled for June 1, 2013.

In House Tournament: One Press of AC weigh in slip received for 1lb 15 oz. Perch. The 1st in-house tournament is scheduled for May 25, 2013.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: Steve Pinkus had a heart attack and is recovering well. The club will send get well card. Ernie Kinsell is sick. Mike Sheehan had a heart attack and is recovering well.

Club Picnic: Nothing to report.

Atlantic County Federation: Nothing to report.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Sea Bass season opens on May 19. At last meeting there was a discussion to shut down the season on eel.

Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

Hooked on Fishing: There were 137 kids that showed up at Patriot Lake for the tournament. T-storms forced to cancel the tournament and Fly fishing demonstration. Prizes will be used at next year’s tournament.

New Applications: Two new applicants were approved, Paul Stonerod & John Navratil.

Unfinished Business: The Nuncio Bruno kids Bluefish tournament is this Saturday at Chestnut Neck boatyard. The T-shirts and Seatow banner are ready. There were many door prizes donated. Volunteers from the club will meet around 9 AM.

Ed will have the membership cards made as soon as Charlie provides the list.

Jim plans to follow up on the design and printing of club business cards.

Installation Dinner: Nothing to report.

New Business: Ed and Joe meet with Mike Shepard on his radio show (1400 AM) on May 11. Ed talked about the GABT activities and Joe talked about ASWS activities.

Jim made a motion to send $200 to the family of the Sea Tow Captain that was killed in a boating accident a couple weeks ago. The motion was approved.

The location for the In-House tournament weigh-in was moved to Up the Creek marina on Faunce Landing road. Dave will supply adult beverage.

There was a motion to send a letter to the Mayor of Absecon to help speed up the Absecon channel dredging project. Motion was approved and Ed will write the letter.

Joe announced that the new sign is up at the Absecon boat ramp with information like tide charts.

A new flyer is needed for the clubs open tournament.

Elections: Nothing to report.

Good of the Order: The Absecon Bay Sportsmen center will give away free gift certificates for winners of the open day flounder.
Jim announced that a couple kids that worked with him last summer are do very well in their crew tournaments.

The meeting of the Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen was called to order by President Jim Van Daley. The club performed the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our Military.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the January 14, 2013 meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer’s Report: General Account: N/A Charity Account: N/A

Trustee Report: Trustees met at Jim Van Daley’s house on February 21 primarily to review budget. The budget was agreed upon. Some of the dates were selected for tournaments, including kids’ Bluefish tournament, the kids’ Bluefish tournament will be increased to $10.00 from $5.00.

G.A.C.F. (Greater Atlantic Cancer Fund, formerly GABT) Report: The meeting was cancelled for February due to lack of attendance.

In House Tournament: Nothing to report.

Open Tournament: Nothing to report.

Sunshine: No report of anyone sick.

Club Picnic: Nothing to report.

Atlantic County Federation: The youth shoot will be held on March 16. The Federation dinner was held at Kerry-Brooke on February 18. The attendance and dinner were good. The 50/50 was $1850.00.

NJ Marine Fisheries: The fluke season was introduced with a shortened season, will run from May 18th to September 16th, with the same size length and 5 fish per day.

Field of Dreams: Nothing to report.

Hooked on Fishing: The kids’ Bluefish tournament is scheduled for May 18.

Unfinished Business: The speaker on April 21 at the Brigantine meeting will be Captain Mike Cerelli regarding the Jersey Shore beach and boat tournament.

New Business: Joe Ricciardi is working on printing new applications and calendar of events. Charles Elwell reminded everyone that the dues are now past due. A date to remember is May 11 for the Patriot Lake fishing tournament. Just show up if you wish to volunteer. Ed Goldman reported that Bob Cusack received an email from Lloyd at the ACUA in reference to the watershed stream assessment program. He will be contacted to try to get him as an additional speaker for the April meeting. Following is the list of tournaments: May 25, June 22, July 8, July 20 open tournament, Aug 10. There will be only one membership meeting in May due to Memorial Day conflict. The Sneaky Hollow Perch tournament will take place on April 27.
