ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN
MINUTES
April 10, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the March 13th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that a meeting was held on March 15th. Next meeting scheduled for April 19th. They are finalizing the rules for the Striper/Bluefish Tournament.

SUNSHINE: Bob Hagel is out of the nursing home. Jack Hermann had neck surgery.

FEDERATION: The next meeting is Thursday April 13th. Input is needed from hunters regarding deer season and possibly extending doe day to three days.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Next meeting will be held Thursday April 13th at the Galloway Library. Meeting starts at 4:00 PM.

HOOKED ON FISHING: Need Volunteers for Patriot Lake on May 13th 7:30 to 11:00 AM. April 22nd is the Field of Dreams first baseball game of the season. Volunteers are needed to put flyers on cars. May 20th is the kids bluefish tournament.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Current website host is ending their support at the end of the year. We will be switching to GoDaddy who is offering two years of free service and $100 a year thereafter.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statements and mail, LIBT

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: One new applicant. Gunner Elbertson was approved for membership.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle drawing was held. Winners are: 1st Place: Ernest Deman ($1,035), 2nd Place: Dan Bodey, ($414) 3rd Place: Madison DDomenico ($207), 4th Place: Bill Will ($207), 5th Place: Krista Lodilo ($207)

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi made a first draft of a sign advertising the open tournament.

March 13, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the February 13th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Jim VanDaly repoted that the trustees met on February 27th, set the budget for the year and set the tournament dates.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that a meeting was held on February 15th. Next meeting scheduled for March 15th.

TOURNAMENTS: The in-house tournaments will be May 27th, June 10th, July 8th and August 19th. Weigh-ins will be at the Pitney Pub.

SUNSHINE: John Reese was in attendance. Jim VanDaly visited Bob Hagel.

FEDERATION: The Youth Shoot will be held Saturday March 18th. Registration will begin at 9:00 AM. They will be moving the dinner to the Greek Orthodox Church at Mill Rd and Fernwood Ave in Egg Harbor Township.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Next meeting will be held Thursday April 13th at the Galloway Library. Meeting starts at 4:00 PM.

February 13, 2017

Jim Van Daley, President, brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the January 9 meeting were read and approved with two minor corrections: The date shown should have been December 12. Also under marine fisheries will be assistant director of the division and former director David Chandra will be a policy director. The treasurers’ report was read and approved. .

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Meeting scheduled for February 27 at 7:30 PM at Jim Van Daley’s home.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that there was a committee meeting to discuss ways to make the bluefish tournament more interesting to draw more fishermen. One thought was to do the whole tournament in one day. There will be another meeting February 15.

SUNSHINE: Bob Hagel has been hospitalized due to diabetes and is at Royal Suites. John Reese is in ACMC due to his heart problem and is having a pacemaker installed. Lou Schott said he would send get well cards.

FEDERATION: The annual venison dinner will be held Monday, February 20 at Kerry Brook. Anyone that wants to can help bone out and trim the deer meat on Sunday the 19th at Port Gun Club. The annual youth shoot will be held again at Red Wing Sporting Clays in March.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Larry Herrighty will be the new division director, Dave Golden will be the new assistant director and former director, David Chanda, will be a policy director for the DEP. It appears the fluke size will increase to 19 inches. Lou Schott mentioned that Representative Frank LoBiondo said he will do all he can do to change the limit back to at least what it was.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Normal correspondence.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Rich Oesser is handling raffle tickets and still has some available; call 609-442-3020. The installation dinner was a big success at the Crab Trap with 52 people attending and plenty of good door prizes. Cost wise it was a break-even event. Awards: Flounder: Shawn Van Daley, winner’ Joe Engleman with the largest flounder. Weakfish: Bob Hagel; Bob also had the largest weakfish. Bluefish: Dave Burke heaviest 3 weight total. Joe Engleman, heaviest bluefish. Fisherman of the Year: Shawn Van Daley. Heaviest striper: Jay Levance. Heaviest perch: Jeff Reese. Vice-President Lou Schott received a special award for years of service to the club.

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi is in the process of ordering new club jackets for anyone interested. The
price is $44.00 $2.00 more for extra large sizes. He needs an order of at least 12.

January 9, 2017

Jim Van Daley, President, brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the December 12 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Meeting scheduled for January 18.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: Dinner tickets are available for the annual Venison Dinner on Monday, February 20, 2017, cost $30.00 in advance, or $35.00 at the door. The Garden State Outdoor Sports Show is January 12-15 at the Raritan Center in Edison, NJ. The Veterans’ Pheasant Hunt was a great success with 40 participants. Larry Herrighty will be the new Division director and Dave Golden will be the policy advisor.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Held a meeting on Thursday, January 5th. Not looking good for Flounder. They’re asking for a limit of two fish at 19 inches.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bills, bank statements and a calendar from Field of Dreams.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle tickets are available. See Rich
Oeser for tickets.

NEW BUSINESS: Paul Stonerod will be leaving the club. We need to send him a letter of appreciation. The annual installment dinner is on Friday, February 3 at the Crab Trap. The menu will remain the same as last year as will the cost ($35.00). Door prizes should be fewer and better. Jim gave weigh-in slips to Charlie.
We need flyers printed, 100 of each to start and possibly yard signs. Jim attended a meeting for Hooked On Fishing Not Drugs. We can use the name without sending anyone to the classes, but we won’t get state funding, which we don’t need. A Trustees meeting will be scheduled.

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the November 14th meeting were read, corrected, and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Meeting scheduled for December 14. Discussion about the sponsor dinner at the Pleasantville Yacht club and how nice it was. Music was provided by Andy Berlin. Food was excellent and prepared by tom and family from the clam shack.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: Dinner tickets for the annual venison dinner will cost more at the door now by 5 dollars. Also, Dave Chandler, director of NJ fish and game will be attending the meeting.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Tom Fote is now overseer of lobster management for the state.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bills and bank statement.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle tickets are printed and available. Rich Oeser agreed to be in charge of the tickets. Thank you Rich.

NEW BUSINESS: Tournament fees will be the same as last year. $120 for 4 tournaments. Need new flyers to be prepared for the Federation dinner. May 20, 2017 will be kids blue fish tournament. July 14 will be captains meeting for the open tournament and the 15th will be the day of the tournament. All weigh-ins and captain meetings will be at the Pitney Pub on Pitney Road. Jim has asked for Paul Stonerod to make up new flyers for the land and sea tournament to be given out at the Federation dinner. Lou Schott stated that the annual Installation Dinner will be February 3, again at the Crab Trap. Price and meal selection will be determined later.

November 14, 2016

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the October 10th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: The Chinese Auction was well attended and raised $10,800. The hall was not certified for Bingo.

SUNSHINE: Dave Showell’s father passed away, Conrad “Buss” Will, father of Bill Will, passed away. Lou Schott will send cards on behalf of the club.

Federation: The NJOA wants people to write to their legislative representatives concerning bills on the topics of the bear hunt, raccoon traps and protecting the offshore reefs. The NJOA will be holding meetings at 7:00 PM on Thursday November 17th at Congress Hall in Cape May and in Toms River.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Held a meeting on Thursday November 10th.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No Report.

COMMUNICATIONS: The club received a thank you letter from the Field of Dreams and members of the RFA have received raffle tickets for an Alaska Fishing Trip valued at $7,000.00. They are for sale at $25.00 a piece or five for $100.00.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Charlie sent in the application for the club’s annual 50/50 raffle. Jim exhibited a plaque, newspaper article, pictures and score cards for the club’s float from the 2002 Miss America Parade Float. The float, aka “Jim’s boat”, is currently for sale.

NEW BUSINESS: Frank McGinley drooped off some fishing rods at Joe Ricciardi’s store if the club or anyone in it would care to liquidate them at a flea market or yard sale.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: A sailing vessel named KONA out of Southold, New York got it’s mast wedged under the Brigantine Bridge shortly before 8:30 AM that morning. The Coast Guard was on the scene by 8:40 AM. Joe Ricciardi has requested that someone use his boat to catch a fish and break the ‘skunk’. John Reese said that a guy in Egg Harbor bagged an 8 point buck that was 180 lbs. dressed.

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the September 26 meeting were read and approved. There was no treasurers’ report as Charles was home ill.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: A meeting is scheduled for 10/19. The annual Chinese Auction is November 5.

SUNSHINE: No report.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: A meeting was held October 4-5 at Seaview Country Club and it was open to the public. There was continuing discussion about placement or removal of commercial sea bass pots from the artificial reefs. Because of continuing controversy, the issue is being put out for public comment.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

TOURNAMENTS: Paul Stonerod gave an update on the Land and Sea tournament. All categories are still open except for fluke. The perch and striper tournaments are still open.

COMMUNICATIONS: Received bank statements.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: President Van Daley obtained an application from Port Republic for our annual lottery. Field of Dreams: President Van Daley has an $825.00 check for the Field of Dreams, but due to a rainout, the presentation of the check will be made at the first pitch of the new 2017 baseball season.

NEW BUSINESS: Paul Stonerod stated that the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife was giving fines for people catching undersized Porgies. Those that caught them thought they were catching pin fish. October nominations: Trustees: Paul Stonerod, Joe Ricciardi, David Holmes, Bob Zussman, Harry Walker, John Reese. Sargeant at Arms: Shawn Van Daley; Treasurer: Charles Elwell; Secretary: Bob Cusack; Vice President: Lou Schott; President: Jim Van Daley. For the record, nominations are still open for anyone wishing to compete for an office.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: There was discussion to place “Good of the Order” back into the minutes as it usually contains the lighter side of club information. The “Shep on Fishing” radio show on Saturday, October 8 interviewed Paul Stonerod. Part of the discussion concerned the fluke reduced quota for 2017. Shepard also interviewed Dave Showell, who mainly spoke about local striper fishing.

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the September 12 meeting were read and approved; one comment that the good of the order should not be part of the minutes. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: The Chinese auction will be held on November 5. The sponsors dinner for the bluefish tournament will be held on November 12 at the Pleasantville Yacht Basin. A Coach Purse Bingo fundraiser will be held on December 2. The GACF is also a co-sponsor with a race day at the Millville Race Track on October 12. Any profits will be split with another organization. The cost is $250.00.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: The Mid-Atlantic Fish Management Council will be held at Seaview Country Club starting October 4 and is open to the public.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

TOURNAMENTS: Jim and Lou had a meeting with BJ, the owner of Pitney Pub, regarding holding our closed and open tournaments there. He is very open to it and we feel it should work out very well.

COMMUNICATIONS: Received bank statements.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The open tournament realized a profit of $225. There was a motion made and approved to present $500 to the Field of Dreams from the club, however, Pat Egnor donated $100 of her winnings at the installation dinner and Karl Stock donated $225 of his winnings from our open tournament, so the total donation will be $825.00.

Also, under unfinished business Van Daley wants the treasurer to get started on the state lottery application.

NEW BUSINESS: No new business.

PICNIC: Lou announced the dessert plaque has been updated with this year’s winner. Bob Cusack is holding the plaque.

Next meeting: Monday, October 10 at 7:30 PM; Note seasonal change from twice a month to the second Monday of each month, starting at 7:30 PM.

September 12, 2016

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the August 22 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: There will be a meeting next week on Wednesday. The Chinese auction will be held in November. A Coach First Purse bingo will be held in November.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: Tony Zachary has tickets for the Friends on NRA to be held October 1. Because the participation to the dinner was down there was a smaller donation for the FOD kids.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Mid Atlantic will meet in mid-October and decide fishing limits by December.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Posted Day on the Bay pictures. Pictures from the picnic will be posted soon.

TOURNAMENTS: Land & Sea and the Striper and Perch tournaments are still on going. It would seem the cost to have the weigh-ins at Pitney tavern would cost less than the club hosting it at the legion Jim and Lou will meet with the owner soon.

COMMUNICATIONS: Received bank statements. Received free tickets for the Jersey Shore boat sale.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Need a committee for the “outstanding member award.” Charlie to determine how much money to donate to the FOD organization. Need to send the Brigantine Elks club a thank you letter.

NEW BUSINESS: No new business.

PICNIC: The picnic made money again. The music was great and will be back next year. There were over 100 people counting kids. Ginny Zussman did a good job keeping track of the attendees. Collected $230 for the 50/50. The extra food will be donated to the food bank. Bob will get the dessert winner plaque updated.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Talked about the Miss America parade and when the club used to have a float in the parade. Jim has some pictures he will bring in.

TOURNAMENTS: In-House: Charlie was not available to give out prizes for the last in-house tournament. Land & Sea and the Striper and Perch tournaments are still on going.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The “Day on the Bay” event was successful. The kids had a great time and the BBQ was good. The club banner was left behind and Dave said he would go the Elks club and see if was available.

PICNIC: Need to send out flyers. Talked about opening up the picnic to non-club members and it was voted down. Need to post on website and Facebook.
