ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN

MINUTES

June 12, 2017

 

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of May 22 were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

TRUSTEES:                             No report.

 

GACF:                                      Charlie did send the correct amount of $250.00 in the original check, there is some confusion at the GACF. There were only 13 boats in the tournament. The tournament will be discussed at Wednesdays meeting to see if it should continue.

 

SUNSHINE:                             No report of anyone sick.

 

FEDERATION:                       No Report.

 

NJ MARINE FISHERIES:     No Report

 

HOOKED ON FISHING:       No report

 

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK:        After some debugging and getting the guys at Camweb design to help I was able to create links to the GACF and GABT websites.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:           Received bank statements.

 

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: Received 3 new applicants; Ed Fisher, Leo Capone, & Joseph King Jr.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:     Only a few members have not paid dues. The club is up to over 70 paying members. Bob will send a thank you to Rich & Cathy Troger who donated several rods, reels, &  and tackle to be given to kids at the Kids bluefish tournament next May. The Absecon channel is now marked.

 

NEW BUSINESS:                    Nothing reported

 

TOURNAMENTS:                  John Reese reported he caught a 1,89 Perch. Discussed open tournament rules.  Jim and Lou plan to meet with owner of Pitney Pub to work out detail of open and in-house tournament. Agreed to order 150 t-shirts this year. Assigned members to solicit sponsors. Agreed to locations to place signs. Plan to order a few more signs.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER:      Ed helped with the Semper-Fi fund in Tuckerton and took wounded warriors out fishing for the day and a BBQ afterwards.

May 22, 2017 Minutes

May 22, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of May 8 were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was no available. Closing balances: Raffle Account: N/A General Account: N/A Charity Account: N/A

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Charlie sent a check to GACF for $200, need to send an additional $50. Captains meeting for the upcoming tournament will be held on June 1 at 7:00PM. So far 8 boats have entered.

SUNSHINE: No report of anyone sick.

FEDERATION: The Patriot lake tournament was discussed.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Ed initially reported that the flounder season may not open due to not being in compliance, later in the meeting he received a text indicating it would open as planned.

HOOKED ON FISHING: The tournament was moved to Sunday because of high wind. 54 kids entered and many nice bluefish were caught, the heaviest being 11.96LB.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Looking into adding GACF and GABT links.

COMMUNICATIONS: Received and thank you note from Lucky Dog.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Jim discussed the possibility of increasing the raffle period to maybe around the time of the picnic in order to raise more money. It was questioned if we could keep it open that long.

NEW BUSINESS: Jim asked that we start thinking about sponsors for the open tournament. Marker updates are behind schedule, only 4 state employees are working it.

TOURNAMENTS: Jim approved the new signs and are on order at $10 each. Jay Lavance caught a 36.25LB Striper. Pomona hunting club fishing tournament will be held on June 10. A member complained about weigh-in slips were filed very late. The tournament committee will meet and discuss. In-house tournament is this Saturday 5/27.

May 8, 2017 Minutes

April 24, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes were read and had one correction: the GABT tournament will be on June 3, not June 6. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: So far, 5 boats are signed up the tournament. And this year stripers are added in addition to bluefish. The captain’s meeting and the awards banquet will be held at the Brigantine American legion. It was suggested that there be a link between GACF and our fishing club as far as websites. We will contact Bob Cusack about that.

SUNSHINE: No report.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: There will be an emergency meeting of the NJ marine fisheries after the Thursday regional fisheries council regarding the flounder situation in NJ. The state has requested to go out of compliance and revert back to the 2016 flounder regulations.

HOOKED ON FISHING: The club needs volunteers for the patriot lake fishing tournament for kids. To be held Saturday, May 13. May 20 is the kid’s bluefish tournament at chestnut neck boat yard. We need volunteers for that call or text Lou Schott at 742-2382. The tee shirts have been ordered

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: We received a sponsor request from LIBT to be held in June. Our club budgets a donation to them

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: No report

NEW BUSINESS: Jim Van Daley thought it would be a good idea to get signs made up for the kid’s bluefish tournament to be placed the same as we will do for our open tournament. Also, Jim Van Daley had the open tournament signs made a cost of $10 each. Chas Elwell said there are still some members who have not paid their dues and he will be sending out another notice.

TOURNAMENTS: Jay Lavance was present so Jim Van Daley presented him his plaque for the largest striper registered at the club for the year 2016. The fish weighed 36.25 LB.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: the sneaky hollow perch tournament was held in April. There was a good turnout, good prizes and good food.

April 24, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the April 10th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Requested money for their ad book. We already budgeted for that. Their tournament will be June 6.

SUNSHINE: No report.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: No report.

HOOKED ON FISHING: The club needs a few good men as volunteers for the patriot lake hooked on fishing on May 13, roughly 7:30 am to 11:30 am. The April 22 field of dreams presentation was rained out so was changed to the following day, Sunday the 23. President Jim Van Daley had no volunteers to help him distribute our tournament flyers at the event. May 20 is the kid’s bluefish tournament at chestnut neck. We will need volunteers to help with this event. Call Lou Schott to finds out what you can do to help! We already have 2 fishing poles donated and $200 donated from the Atlantis county federation. We have 42 tee shirts in stock so Jim will order more.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: No report.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: One application received. Joseph Migone. He was approved, subject to receipt of annual dues. Lou will call him.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Jim Van Daley suggested perhaps a later date for the drawing of our pay day for tax day would be better to sell more tickets in that we can sell them at our open and kids bluefish tournaments.

NEW BUSINESS: Jim Van Daley will take the sign that Joe Ricciardi made up to a sign shop in Bridgeton to find out the cost of making 10 or 12 signs for the open tournament.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Jim Van Daley sold his boat.

April 10, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the March 13th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that a meeting was held on March 15th. Next meeting scheduled for April 19th. They are finalizing the rules for the Striper/Bluefish Tournament.

SUNSHINE: Bob Hagel is out of the nursing home. Jack Hermann had neck surgery.

FEDERATION: The next meeting is Thursday April 13th. Input is needed from hunters regarding deer season and possibly extending doe day to three days.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Next meeting will be held Thursday April 13th at the Galloway Library. Meeting starts at 4:00 PM.

HOOKED ON FISHING: Need Volunteers for Patriot Lake on May 13th 7:30 to 11:00 AM. April 22nd is the Field of Dreams first baseball game of the season. Volunteers are needed to put flyers on cars. May 20th is the kids bluefish tournament.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Current website host is ending their support at the end of the year. We will be switching to GoDaddy who is offering two years of free service and $100 a year thereafter.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statements and mail, LIBT

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: One new applicant. Gunner Elbertson was approved for membership.

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi made a first draft of a sign advertising the open tournament.

March 13, 2017

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the February 13th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Jim VanDaly repoted that the trustees met on February 27th, set the budget for the year and set the tournament dates.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that a meeting was held on February 15th. Next meeting scheduled for March 15th.

TOURNAMENTS: The in-house tournaments will be May 27th, June 10th, July 8th and August 19th. Weigh-ins will be at the Pitney Pub.

SUNSHINE: John Reese was in attendance. Jim VanDaly visited Bob Hagel.

FEDERATION: The Youth Shoot will be held Saturday March 18th. Registration will begin at 9:00 AM. They will be moving the dinner to the Greek Orthodox Church at Mill Rd and Fernwood Ave in Egg Harbor Township.

February 13, 2017

Jim Van Daley, President, brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the January 9 meeting were read and approved with two minor corrections: The date shown should have been December 12. Also under marine fisheries will be assistant director of the division and former director David Chandra will be a policy director. The treasurers’ report was read and approved. .

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Meeting scheduled for February 27 at 7:30 PM at Jim Van Daley’s home.

GACF: Ed Goldman reported that there was a committee meeting to discuss ways to make the bluefish tournament more interesting to draw more fishermen. One thought was to do the whole tournament in one day. There will be another meeting February 15.

SUNSHINE: Bob Hagel has been hospitalized due to diabetes and is at Royal Suites. John Reese is in ACMC due to his heart problem and is having a pacemaker installed. Lou Schott said he would send get well cards.

FEDERATION: The annual venison dinner will be held Monday, February 20 at Kerry Brook. Anyone that wants to can help bone out and trim the deer meat on Sunday the 19th at Port Gun Club. The annual youth shoot will be held again at Red Wing Sporting Clays in March.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Larry Herrighty will be the new division director, Dave Golden will be the new assistant director and former director, David Chanda, will be a policy director for the DEP. It appears the fluke size will increase to 19 inches. Lou Schott mentioned that Representative Frank LoBiondo said he will do all he can do to change the limit back to at least what it was.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Normal correspondence.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Rich Oesser is handling raffle tickets and still has some available; call 609-442-3020. The installation dinner was a big success at the Crab Trap with 52 people attending and plenty of good door prizes. Cost wise it was a break-even event. Awards: Flounder: Shawn Van Daley, winner’ Joe Engleman with the largest flounder. Weakfish: Bob Hagel; Bob also had the largest weakfish. Bluefish: Dave Burke heaviest 3 weight total. Joe Engleman, heaviest bluefish. Fisherman of the Year: Shawn Van Daley. Heaviest striper: Jay Levance. Heaviest perch: Jeff Reese. Vice-President Lou Schott received a special award for years of service to the club.

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi is in the process of ordering new club jackets for anyone interested. The
price is $44.00 $2.00 more for extra large sizes. He needs an order of at least 12.

January 9, 2017

Jim Van Daley, President, brought the meeting to order with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the December 12 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Meeting scheduled for January 18.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: Dinner tickets are available for the annual Venison Dinner on Monday, February 20, 2017, cost $30.00 in advance, or $35.00 at the door. The Garden State Outdoor Sports Show is January 12-15 at the Raritan Center in Edison, NJ. The Veterans’ Pheasant Hunt was a great success with 40 participants. Larry Herrighty will be the new Division director and Dave Golden will be the policy advisor.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Held a meeting on Thursday, January 5th. Not looking good for Flounder. They’re asking for a limit of two fish at 19 inches.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bills, bank statements and a calendar from Field of Dreams.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle tickets are available. See Rich
Oeser for tickets.

NEW BUSINESS: Paul Stonerod will be leaving the club. We need to send him a letter of appreciation. The annual installment dinner is on Friday, February 3 at the Crab Trap. The menu will remain the same as last year as will the cost ($35.00). Door prizes should be fewer and better. Jim gave weigh-in slips to Charlie.
We need flyers printed, 100 of each to start and possibly yard signs. Jim attended a meeting for Hooked On Fishing Not Drugs. We can use the name without sending anyone to the classes, but we won’t get state funding, which we don’t need. A Trustees meeting will be scheduled.

December 12, 2016

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the November 14th meeting were read, corrected, and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Meeting scheduled for December 14. Discussion about the sponsor dinner at the Pleasantville Yacht club and how nice it was. Music was provided by Andy Berlin. Food was excellent and prepared by tom and family from the clam shack.

SUNSHINE: No one reported sick.

FEDERATION: Dinner tickets for the annual venison dinner will cost more at the door now by 5 dollars. Also, Dave Chandler, director of NJ fish and game will be attending the meeting.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Tom Fote is now overseer of lobster management for the state.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bills and bank statement.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The “Pay Day for Tax Day” raffle tickets are printed and available. Rich Oeser agreed to be in charge of the tickets. Thank you Rich.

NEW BUSINESS: Tournament fees will be the same as last year. $120 for 4 tournaments. Need new flyers to be prepared for the Federation dinner. May 20, 2017 will be kids blue fish tournament. July 14 will be captains meeting for the open tournament and the 15th will be the day of the tournament. All weigh-ins and captain meetings will be at the Pitney Pub on Pitney Road. Jim has asked for Paul Stonerod to make up new flyers for the land and sea tournament to be given out at the Federation dinner. Lou Schott stated that the annual Installation Dinner will be February 3, again at the Crab Trap. Price and meal selection will be determined later.

November 14, 2016

The meeting was brought to order by Jim Van Daley, President, with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops. The minutes of the October 10th meeting were read and approved. The treasurers’ report was read and approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: The Chinese Auction was well attended and raised $10,800. The hall was not certified for Bingo.

SUNSHINE: Dave Showell’s father passed away, Conrad “Buss” Will, father of Bill Will, passed away. Lou Schott will send cards on behalf of the club.

Federation: The NJOA wants people to write to their legislative representatives concerning bills on the topics of the bear hunt, raccoon traps and protecting the offshore reefs. The NJOA will be holding meetings at 7:00 PM on Thursday November 17th at Congress Hall in Cape May and in Toms River.

NJ Marine Fisheries: Held a meeting on Thursday November 10th.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No Report.

COMMUNICATIONS: The club received a thank you letter from the Field of Dreams and members of the RFA have received raffle tickets for an Alaska Fishing Trip valued at $7,000.00. They are for sale at $25.00 a piece or five for $100.00.

MEMBER APPLICATIONS: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Charlie sent in the application for the club’s annual 50/50 raffle. Jim exhibited a plaque, newspaper article, pictures and score cards for the club’s float from the 2002 Miss America Parade Float. The float, aka “Jim’s boat”, is currently for sale.

NEW BUSINESS: Frank McGinley drooped off some fishing rods at Joe Ricciardi’s store if the club or anyone in it would care to liquidate them at a flea market or yard sale.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: A sailing vessel named KONA out of Southold, New York got it’s mast wedged under the Brigantine Bridge shortly before 8:30 AM that morning. The Coast Guard was on the scene by 8:40 AM. Joe Ricciardi has requested that someone use his boat to catch a fish and break the ‘skunk’. John Reese said that a guy in Egg Harbor bagged an 8 point buck that was 180 lbs. dressed.
