ABSECON SALTWATER SPORTSMEN
MINUTES
May 11, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of April 13 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: June 6 is the tournament date. In August the GACF will sponsor a beef and beer at the Black Cat; the date to be announced.

SUNSHINE: Olie Carlson was released from Atlantic Care to Linwood Convalescent Center.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Governor Christie signed the striper bill. Also, fluke season starts May 22.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: up and running.

TOURNAMENTS: There are 8 boats signed up for the in house tournament. The Land and Sea tournament has been announced in the Fisherman magazine. Paul Stonerod is disappointed with all the work he has done that few people have signed up. Nuncio Bruno kids’ bluefish tournament is set for Saturday. May 16. It’s time to start collecting door prizes for the club’s open tournament. The Pomona Gun Club is having a fluke tournament on June 6; $25 per person. Weigh in is at 2pm, 3 heaviest fish. Captain’s meeting on Friday the 5th from 5 to 9. Food and drink will be provided at the weigh in. The sneaky hollow perch tournament went well although not many decent size perch were caught. The 50/50 went for $2710.

COMMUNICATIONS: No report.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: 2 new applicants were approved: Rich Oeser and David Holmes.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: There was much discussion about dredging the Absecon Bay area again. There was an article in the Press of Atlantic City about it. Joe Ricciardi is in the process of making new calendars for this year’s events.

NEW BUSINESS: A motion was made and passed to give the Field of Dreams $100 for 500 flags to be placed around the field, in honor of all New Jersey citizens that were killed in service to our country. Steve Mars from the U.S. wildlife refuge has asked us if we wanted to be the owners and caretakers of an aluminum fishing pier in Bass River Twp. just off of the Bass River. Lou Schott recommended that we form a committee of 2 to inspect it and get more information. It is understood the refuge would provide funds to us to maintain the pier.

April 13, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of March 9 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: No report, but the next meeting is Thursday night.

SUNSHINE: Olie Carlson is in cardiac rehab at Betty Bacharach. Lou Schott saw him Thursday night and Jim Van Daley saw him Sunday night. Olie hopes to fish the perch tournament on May 2.

FEDERATION: The youth shoot was held in March after being rained out the week before. 62 kids and their parents attended. They were treated to t-shirts, trophies, hot dog and venison sandwich lunch at Port Gun Club.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Held April 7. It was determined that the fluke season is May 22 to September 26 with limits of 5 fish at 18 inches. There was discussion about striper limits including bonus tags but no one is sure at this point.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

TOURNAMENTS: See New Business.

COMMUNICATIONS: A letter of thanks and appreciation was received from Butch Conover, Chairman of the Youth Committee for the Atlantic County Federation for the club’s help and assistance at the youth shoot.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: John Navitall, Jr. was welcomed as a new member. His father is a member.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi announced there will be a fishing flea market at the Pomona Gun Club on Sunday, April 19, 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Our club will put up an unattended booth with flyers and member applications. Admission is $2.00, free for our club members. Joe also discussed our fishing seminar in Brigantine on April 27 at 8 PM, featuring Captain Dan Schafer, who has spoken to us before. It was voted and approved that we give Dan a $50.00 Wawa gift card in appreciation. Paul Stonerod spoke about the land and sea tournament, which is simpler than last year. There is a $20.00 fee for a member or a guest. The contest runs from May 1 to October 31 for 4 different species of fish, which may be weighed in at any bait and tackle that has a certified scale. Ed Goldman sent an email to Dave Chandra, Director of N.J. Fish and Wildlife to commend him for his letter to the Press showing that the artificial reefs are primarily for recreational fishermen. Dave Chandra replied back that he appreciated our comments. Ed had volunteered to contact Mr. Chandra at the March meeting. Three women, Bev Dinger, Marilyn Brown, and Charlotte Brown, were given honorary memberships to the club at our annual Installation Dinner. President Van Daley wants copies of the minutes sent to them.

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi mentioned we will have 2 speakers through the summer; dates to be announced. Sneaky Hollow Perch Tournament May 2; Patriot Lake Hooked on Fishing, May 9; Nuncio Bruno Kids’ Bluefish Tournament, May 16. Tony Zarach mentioned that the Bass Pro Shop will open tomorrow and that one charity (NJOA) has been provided with hot dogs and sodas to sell at a profit at the opening. Ed Goldman mentioned there was an article in the Current about our club, most likely information given to them last year that they had on file.

The fishing committee met after the regular meeting to determine dates for our closed tournaments. They are as follows: May 23, June 20, July 11, and August 15. Additionally, the Polecat Tournament is scheduled for June 20 per Paul Stonerod.

Finally, tickets for the annual “Pay Day for Tax Day” were drawn. First prize: $1020.00 to C. Sicurella; Second: $408.00 to Jim Sykes; Third: $204.00 to Linda Meranus; Fourth: $204.00 to Violet Meyers, and Fifth to Jennifer Snyder for $204.00.

March 9, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with Vice-President Lou Schott presiding. The minutes from February 9 were read and approved. The treasurer was absent therefore, the report was not read and ending balances are not available.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Trustees held a meeting primarily to review the budget. The budget was nearly completed except for picnic information. Lou was to get that info to Charlie via the Internet. The trustees also worked on the 2015 calendar. Not all dates could be set until tides and flounder limits were known.

GACF: No report.

SUNSHINE: Discussion about Ollie Carlson in the hospital.

FEDERATION: The youth shoot is set for March 14 at Red Wing Sporting Clays. The Federation Dinner was held on February 14 at Kerry-Brooke. It was very well attended; the food was excellent, the 50/50 was around $1800.00.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: There will be a meeting in Tuckerton on April 9 to discuss fluke limits and striped bass regulations.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: The installation dinner pictures have been posted to the website and Facebook.

TOURNAMENTS: The Perch and Striper tournaments are now on.

COMMUNICATIONS: No report.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi and Paul Stonerod are looking into ordering club jackets on an individual basis. The cost would be about $40.00. President Van Daley felt the open tournament flyer should be fine-tuned to show where the weigh-in actually is.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be a fishing flea market at the Pomona Gun Club on April 18. There was discussion by Joe Ricciardi that we could put up an unattended table with our applications and some of our tournament flyers. For our meeting on April 27 at the Brigantine VFW we do not have a firm speaker yet but Joe Ricciardi feels he may be able to get the same speaker we had last year, speaking on a different topic. He was an excellent speaker with a very good slide presentation.

We need more flyers for the Nuncio Bruno kid’s bluefish tournament printed for that and our Open Tournament. Lou Schott said he would get it done.

John Glassie from Field of Dreams said he plans to place 15,000 American flags around the field. The flags represent all New Jersey service men and women who died in service. He will ask for donations to pay for the flags. President Van Daley recommended that a letter be sent to Dave Chandra, director of NJ Fish and Game, for his excellent rebuttal letter regarding use of the artificial reefs used by commercial fishermen. Ed Goldman said he would send Dave an email.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Dates were discussed for a meeting. It was decided to meet on Feb. 19th at Jim’s Van Daley’s house. Jim will contact the trustees.

GACF: The GACF had a booth at the AC Boat Show. Raffle tickets were sold and information about the GABT was distributed.

SUNSHINE: It was reported that Olie Carlson was home and doing well.
WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Charlie Elwell will put the tournament results on Facebook.
COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statements were received; also free tickets to a boat show to be held in Edison, NJ were received.
APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: Jeff Krawczyk was proposed and accepted for membership.

Lou Schott discussed the installation dinner; everything went well with no complaints.

Charlie Elwell reported that he had mailed out the dues notices for 2015.

Lou Schott distributed the remaining tickets for the Venison dinner. Volunteers are needed on Saturday morning at the Pomona Gun club to prepare the venison. He also reminded the members that Ed Goldman has the tickets for the club raffle for those needing tickets.

NEW BUSINESS:

Joe Riccardi requested $20.00 to purchase a weather-proof “Absecon Saltwater Sportsmen” name sign for our informational sign at the boat ramp. A motion was made and passed. He also reported that he is looking into getting a speaker for the April meeting in Brigantine. A suggestion was made to contact Scott Newhall, a local fisherman who has given seminars and written articles.

Charlie Elwell brought up the fact that our minutes on line contain our banking balances. It was decided initially when setting up the website that our banking balances would not be on the online version of the minutes. Ed Goldman added that the “Good of the Order” also was not to be included in the minutes.

NEW BUSINESS:
• Jim Van Daley purchased a raffle ticket drum.
• There is a fishing seminar scheduled for January 17 and President Van Daley received free tickets for the door prize raffle. Bob Zussman was going to the seminar so he received them.
• Regarding changes in the striper regulations the council recommended one fish at 28 inches and one at 43 inches or larger. The bonus tag would not be eliminated.
• The word is out that Bass Pro Shop is looking for employees to work in their new store in Atlantic City.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Lou spoke about an article from the star ledger about how climate change and the changing ocean temperatures are affecting fish movement up and down the east coast. It was brought up that John Reese’s sister just passed away.

GACF: The actual gross from the Parkertown Chinese auction was $8400.00.
Sunshine: Joe Ricciardi received an email from Jill, daughter of Jack and Janet Petro. They are adjusting to living in northern New York and they miss their friends from the fishing club. There was also discussion about the passing of Ann Bruno, owner of Chestnut Neck boatyard, and how she enjoyed being the “hot dog lady” at the kid’s bluefish tournaments. Some members of the club attended the viewing.
Federation: There was discussion about the antis attempting to create a law to outlaw snare traps. There was also discussion about the antis protesting the annual NJ bear hunt.
NJMFC: Nothing reported.

COMMUNICATIONS: Our raffle license arrived and Ed Goldman agreed to handle the raffle tickets again. Thank you, Ed. Lou Schott received a phone call from the Crab Trap while at the club meeting and the agreed date for our installation dinner is Friday, January 30. More information will be forthcoming regarding menu and price. Everything else should remain the same.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Our banner is done and will be placed at the field of dreams in the spring.

NEW BUSINESS: Lou Schott informed the meeting that Bob Cusack received a request from Frank Piotrowski to donate his father’s fishing tackle to the club to be used or given to the kids during our kids’ tournament. We accepted it and Bob sent an email thank you to Frank.

ELECTIONS: There were no changes for the nomination of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. There were 6 trustees nominated: John Reese, Joe Ricciardi, Paul Stonerod, Bob Zussman, Ollie Carlson, Harry Walker. Instead of a vote, John Reese removed his name from the slate so there was no need for an election. Ed Goldman made a motion to close nominations, seconded by John Reese. The motion passed.

Sunshine: George Scheurman passed away. George was a long time member and president of the Absecon American Legion. Get well cards will be sent to Ed Goldman and Ed Egnor; a condolence card will be sent to the family of Jerry Dinger.
Federation: no one from our club attended the last meeting.
NJMFC: Nothing reported.
Website: Lou Schott read and talked about an email sent to us from southern fin apparel in which they would give us 10% off their products. there was mild discussion and there was not of much interest from anyone.

Striper and Perch: John Reese weighed in a perch of 1 1/2 pounds.

COMMUNICATIONS: We received a thank you from the Field of Dreams for our generous donation. We have contributed $1200 to them this year.

GACF: The Chinese auction will be held at Parkertown on 10/19. At the last meeting the members were brainstorming ideas on various fundraisers.
Sunshine: Jerry Dinger passed away; he will be missed by the club.
Federation: The C/O will be at the next meeting. The RFA is hosting a fundraiser for Congressman LoBiondo at Viking Yachts.
NJMFC: Nothing reported.

Striper and Perch: ongoing, 2 weigh-ins to date.

COMMUNICATIONS: Sponsor letter for Gilcrest Offshore Restaurant was returned again. Wrong address was on envelope; will be re-mailed to correct address.

NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Jim went to the Field of Dreams game on 9/19 and presented a $500 donation. He gave a speech to all asking for more support and help for the open tournament. FOD agreed to put the ASWS banner on the fence at the baseball field. FOD needs the clubs logo; Joe Ricciardi will furnish.

Jim filed the raffle paperwork with Port Republic and it was approved. Approved license was given to Charlie. Charlie said he would have the raffle tickets by Christmas.

NEW BUSINESS: The club approved to donate $250 to the Cologne Fire Co. for use of their property for the club picnic.

Elections: Are coming up – time to start thinking of names to nominate.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Blue fish are being caught off the beach in Brigantine. The Absecon boat ramp will be closed on 9/27 for a paddle event.

GACF: The Millville speedway will support the GACF on October 1 by giving 20% of the proceeds to the GACF. Entry fee is $250.

NJMFC: Looking for public opinion on what the Striped Bass limits should be. Our area preferred 1 fish.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Need to coordinate with “Field of Dreams” to pick a date to donate the $500 the club approved to give them. Charlie gave Jim the permit for the raffle and Jim will take it to Port Republic’s City Manager for approval.

NEW BUSINESS: The club voted and approved for a new plaque for the most outstanding member of the year and will get presented at the Installation Dinner.

PICNIC: Lou gave a report on the picnic. There were 68 people attended. There was enough money collected from both the 50-50 and entry fees to cover the cost of the picnic. There was very little food left; the burgers and dogs were sold to Nancy Reese. Need to change the flyer to end the event at 4PM. Winners of the dessert contest:
