MINUTES
September 14, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of the August 24 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: The “Beef and Beer” held at the Black Cat in August was successful and everyone had good
time. They are holding their annual Chinese Auction in October.

SUNSHINE: No report of anyone sick.

FEDERATION: Meeting this Thursday, September 17.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: No report.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Need to post picnic pictures.

TOURNAMENTS: In-house tournaments are done for the season. No change to Land & Sea and Striper and Perch tournament.

COMMUNICATIONS: Mail was not picked up.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applicants.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Need to sort out T-Shirt money. Not all sponsors have received their shirts. Sponsor Lindy Hops owes a check. Charlie determined that we could give FOD $600 at an upcoming ball game.

NEW BUSINESS: Need to order 150 T-Shirts for next year’s open tournament. Glenn Insurance wants to be on the T-Shirt next year. The Jersey Devils contacted the Club and offered tickets at reduced prices, which the club could resell at face value. We all decided this was not a good idea.

PICNIC: Lou gave a report, 88 adults attended. The food was great and all had a fun time. The helpers worked hard and were very organized. The club made money. The extra food will be given to the Community Food Bank of South Jersey. Next year we will reduce the amount of clams to 800 and crabs to 1 bushel. The Club agreed to give the Cologne Firehouse a $200 donation.

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of the August 10 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: There will be a “Beef and Beer” at the Black Cat on August 30 from 2 – 6 PM. There will be a small Chinese auction. The cost is $20 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door, includes Roast Beef, salad, and 2 drinks. There will be door prizes and music.

SUNSHINE: No report of anyone sick.

FEDERATION: Closed for the summer.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Flounder quota for 2016 may be cut by 29%. NJ will have to figure out how to comply.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Posted photos from the “Day on the Bay” event. Several Facebook “Likes” were added after the posting.

TOURNAMENTS: The 4th in-house tournament prizes were handed out. No changes to the Land & Sea tournament results. No weigh-in for the Striper and Perch tournament.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statements.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: One new applicant, Jack Hermann, was approved.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The fisherman of the year plaque was returned.

NEW BUSINESS: Charlie needs to determine how much money we can give to FOD.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Nothing to report.

PICNIC: Lou and John need to meet to review food requirements. Need help with cleaning crabs near Oyster Creek at 9AM on 9/12. Need help with Cologne Firehouse picnic tables at 5PM on 9/12. Need help with picnic setup 10PM on Sunday, 9/13.

FIELD OF DREAMS: There were a lot of fish caught at the “Day on the Bay” event with the FOD kids. All had a great time and the BBQ put on by the Elks club was fantastic. Jim acknowledged the members who supported this event. We received a $50 donation from one of the FOD child’s family.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: John Reese took 2nd place at a Perch tournament; 5 fish weighed in at 6.10 lb.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

FEDERATION: Closed for the summer.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Hunters, Fisherman, & Trappers are upset with the closing of the Wharton State forest road. The road was deteriorating due to 4WD use and dumping. Strip Bass bonus tags are available online.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Need to post the “Day on the Bay” event.

TOURNAMENTS: The 4th in-house tournament will be on August 15. Looking for the In-House tournament rules and post on web site. Chris Peszka is now leading in the flounder division of the Land & Sea tournament; it weighed in at 8.56 lb.

COMMUNICATIONS: Bank statements. The club received a check for $100 from Glenn Insurance for the open tournament. Need to add them to the sponsors list when thank you letters are mailed after the “Day on the Bay” event.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Nothing reported.

NEW BUSINESS: The AC press ran an article on improvements to the Absecon boat ramp area. The club was not contacted for input. There was more discussion on Ethanol gas and its problems to marine motors and fuel systems. Lou sent an email to Senator Menendez & Booker and other local assemblymen explain the problem with ethanol, no one has replied yet.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Need to make sure all sponsors received a T-Shirt.

PICNIC: Lou gave an update, location and date not are now set we will be at the Cologne fire house on September 13. Flyers were mailed to all club members.

FIELD OF DREAMS: Need to email Jeff at the Littoral Society and invite him to the “Day on the Bay” event. The Elks club will put on the BBQ. Scoops is providing Ice Cream. We are expecting about 20 kids for the trip. Jim decided that this event will be on the 3rd Monday in August from now on so to not be on the same day as a club meeting. The club would like to have some input to the AC press article on the event to get facts correct.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Spot fish have been reported in the Absecon creek. Ernie Kinsel caught a 6.3 lb. flounder. ASWS was at the Galloway National night out. Joe reported the kids had a blast catching the magnet fish.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: Next meeting is 3rd week in August. The will be a beef and beer at the Black Cat on August 30.

SUNSHINE: Ed Egnor passed away. He was a dedicated member who will surely be missed. Service is tomorrow.

FEDERATION: Closed for the summer.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: There is talk of a 46% reduction flounder catch for 2016. A rule change is needed so the big females are sent back.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: The open tournament was posted in time on Facebook and the website.

TOURNAMENTS: The 4th in-house tournament will be on August 15.

COMMUNICATIONS: Nothing reported.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Bob found the dessert winners for years 2010 – 2014. Both the dessert and fisherman of the year plaques need to be updated.

NEW BUSINESS: Lou brought up the subject of Ethanol Gas and the need to get it removed for marine gas. There is talk of increasing the amount of Ethanol to 15%, this will make the marine engines run hotter and is bad on gas lines and parts in the fuel system on older boats. Lou’s brother has been talking to the NJ politicians. The club should do something to let politicians know the issues with Ethonol.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Tournament and BBQ were good, and had good weather. Jim would like to see more boats sign up. Enough money was raised to support the Day on the Bay event with the FOD kids.

PICNIC: Lou gave an update, location and date not set at this time. The Cologne fire house has 3 church groups on the current planned date. EHC Lake is not a good choice. Another alternative is the Pomona Gun Club. Lou is going to check them out.

FIELD OF DREAMS: The “Day on the Bay” event is set for August 17 and the Fish Finder is good with the date. Need to check with the Elks club and make sure the will host the BBQ once again.

SUNSHINE: Olie Carlson passed away. He was a dedicated member who will surely be missed. Service is on Friday, 7/17. Jack Synder is sick, a card will be sent from the club.

FEDERATION: Closed for the summer.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Next meeting will be on September 3.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Need to check Facebook and website to see if open tournament was posted.

TOURNAMENTS: Payouts of the 2nd and 3rd tournaments were handed out. Land & Sea results to date:
Striper – Jay Levance 32.1 lb Kingfish- Kurt Renart 11.2 oz.
Bluefish- Jay Levance 17.55 lb. Flounder- Fred Hynes 7.03 lb.

COMMUNICATIONS: One open tournament entry application and bank statements.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Dessert plaque was returned and needs to be updated with results from last 6 years. Bob will search the meeting archive. The fisherman of the year plaque also needs to be updated.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Need volunteers to work the BBQ. Lou will pick up the T-shirts. All sponsors for the T-shirt are set. Flyer were posted in many places and mailed to past captains.

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: At the meeting last week a sub-committee was appointed to work on how to improve the tournament. There will be a Beef & Beer on August 30 at the Black Cat Tavern. The Chinese auction will be in October. The Sponsor dinner will be in November at the Pleasantville Yacht Club, now reopened after Sandy.

SUNSHINE: Olie returned home last week with hospice care. Paul Stonerod was going in the hospital for heart surgery. Jack Snyder is sick.

FEDERATION: The last meeting of the year was last Thursday.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: There was discussion on changing the way recreational fishing is done on Flounder; possibly 40 inch limit on total fish.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: Up and running.

TOURNAMENTS: The 2nd in house tournament is this Saturday.

COMMUNICATIONS: Letter from the Attorney General to renew the Club’s charity status.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: No report.

NEW BUSINESS: The club agreed to join the Littoral society, the presentation by Jeff was very good. Individuals may join on the own and be allowed to tag fish.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Agreed to purchase coolers again as prizes. Need to settle on Sponsors and order the T-shirts soon.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: GACF will give ASWS Club 2 X-large T-shirts.

June 8, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of May 11 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.
GACF: The tournament was somewhat disappointing, only 24 boats entered. There were only 7 weigh ins. Bass Pro shop won the tournament.
SUNSHINE: A couple of the club members visited Olie last week.
FEDERATION: There will be a meeting on June 11.
NJ MARINE FISHERIES: No report.
WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: The kid’s bluefish tournament pictures were posted to both the web site and Facebook. Facebook page is up to 95 likes. The domain name service with GoDaddy was paid, which covers the web site name for another 10 years.

TOURNAMENTS: The kids bluefish tournament was a great time this year, there were many fish weighed in over 10 lbs. The winner weighed in at 15.61 lbs. There was a suggestion that the tournament should end at noon since it appeared all entries were in by that time. There was talk to try and get a grant from Trenton. There was also discussion about not using cash as a prize. We need to organize the pictures so the names are associated with them. Paul reported the Land and Sea tournament is doing better; now up to 24 entries and 6 fish have been weighed in. Charlie won the Log Cabin tournament.

NEW BUSINESS: Bass Pro Shop donated $1,000 to the AC Police foundation so the AC fishing derby would continue. The city bailed on this support. The fishing derby is this Saturday at 8AM. Brigantine HOFNOD needs help with their kids fishing tournament.

OPEN TOURNAMNT: Paul will update the open flyer to highlight it’s a fishing tournament. Bob will get copies made to be passed out and mailed. Jim went over the list of sponsors and asked members to solicit door prizes and donations for names on the T shirts.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Shore Shot this Saturday. GACF gave 2 T shirts to ASWS Club.

May 11, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of April 13 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: June 6 is the tournament date. In August the GACF will sponsor a beef and beer at the Black Cat; the date to be announced.

SUNSHINE: Olie Carlson was released from Atlantic Care to Linwood Convalescent Center.

FEDERATION: No report.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Governor Christie signed the striper bill. Also, fluke season starts May 22.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: up and running.

TOURNAMENTS: There are 8 boats signed up for the in house tournament. The Land and Sea tournament has been announced in the Fisherman magazine. Paul Stonerod is disappointed with all the work he has done that few people have signed up. Nuncio Bruno kids’ bluefish tournament is set for Saturday. May 16. It’s time to start collecting door prizes for the club’s open tournament. The Pomona Gun Club is having a fluke tournament on June 6; $25 per person. Weigh in is at 2pm, 3 heaviest fish. Captain’s meeting on Friday the 5th from 5 to 9. Food and drink will be provided at the weigh in. The sneaky hollow perch tournament went well although not many decent size perch were caught. The 50/50 went for $2710.

COMMUNICATIONS: No report.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: 2 new applicants were approved: Rich Oeser and David Holmes.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: There was much discussion about dredging the Absecon Bay area again. There was an article in the Press of Atlantic City about it. Joe Ricciardi is in the process of making new calendars for this year’s events.

NEW BUSINESS: A motion was made and passed to give the Field of Dreams $100 for 500 flags to be placed around the field, in honor of all New Jersey citizens that were killed in service to our country. Steve Mars from the U.S. wildlife refuge has asked us if we wanted to be the owners and caretakers of an aluminum fishing pier in Bass River Twp. just off of the Bass River. Lou Schott recommended that we form a committee of 2 to inspect it and get more information. It is understood the refuge would provide funds to us to maintain the pier.

April 13, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with President Jim Van Daley presiding. The minutes of March 9 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: No report.

GACF: No report, but the next meeting is Thursday night.

SUNSHINE: Olie Carlson is in cardiac rehab at Betty Bacharach. Lou Schott saw him Thursday night and Jim Van Daley saw him Sunday night. Olie hopes to fish the perch tournament on May 2.

FEDERATION: The youth shoot was held in March after being rained out the week before. 62 kids and their parents attended. They were treated to t-shirts, trophies, hot dog and venison sandwich lunch at Port Gun Club.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: Held April 7. It was determined that the fluke season is May 22 to September 26 with limits of 5 fish at 18 inches. There was discussion about striper limits including bonus tags but no one is sure at this point.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: No report.

TOURNAMENTS: See New Business.

COMMUNICATIONS: A letter of thanks and appreciation was received from Butch Conover, Chairman of the Youth Committee for the Atlantic County Federation for the club’s help and assistance at the youth shoot.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: John Navitall, Jr. was welcomed as a new member. His father is a member.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi announced there will be a fishing flea market at the Pomona Gun Club on Sunday, April 19, 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Our club will put up an unattended booth with flyers and member applications. Admission is $2.00, free for our club members. Joe also discussed our fishing seminar in Brigantine on April 27 at 8 PM, featuring Captain Dan Schafer, who has spoken to us before. It was voted and approved that we give Dan a $50.00 Wawa gift card in appreciation. Paul Stonerod spoke about the land and sea tournament, which is simpler than last year. There is a $20.00 fee for a member or a guest. The contest runs from May 1 to October 31 for 4 different species of fish, which may be weighed in at any bait and tackle that has a certified scale. Ed Goldman sent an email to Dave Chandra, Director of N.J. Fish and Wildlife to commend him for his letter to the Press showing that the artificial reefs are primarily for recreational fishermen. Dave Chandra replied back that he appreciated our comments. Ed had volunteered to contact Mr. Chandra at the March meeting. Three women, Bev Dinger, Marilyn Brown, and Charlotte Brown, were given honorary memberships to the club at our annual Installation Dinner. President Van Daley wants copies of the minutes sent to them.

NEW BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi mentioned we will have 2 speakers through the summer; dates to be announced. Sneaky Hollow Perch Tournament May 2; Patriot Lake Hooked on Fishing, May 9; Nuncio Bruno Kids’ Bluefish Tournament, May 16. Tony Zarach mentioned that the Bass Pro Shop will open tomorrow and that one charity (NJOA) has been provided with hot dogs and sodas to sell at a profit at the opening. Ed Goldman mentioned there was an article in the Current about our club, most likely information given to them last year that they had on file.

The fishing committee met after the regular meeting to determine dates for our closed tournaments. They are as follows: May 23, June 20, July 11, and August 15. Additionally, the Polecat Tournament is scheduled for June 20 per Paul Stonerod.

Finally, tickets for the annual “Pay Day for Tax Day” were drawn. First prize: $1020.00 to C. Sicurella; Second: $408.00 to Jim Sykes; Third: $204.00 to Linda Meranus; Fourth: $204.00 to Violet Meyers, and Fifth to Jennifer Snyder for $204.00.

Next meeting: Monday, April 27 at the Brigantine VFW Post #6964, 121 31st St. South, Brigantine, at 8:00 PM sharp.

March 9, 2015

The meeting opened with a salute to the flag and a moment of silence for our troops, with Vice-President Lou Schott presiding. The minutes from February 9 were read and approved. The treasurer was absent therefore, the report was not read and ending balances are not available.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRUSTEES: Trustees held a meeting primarily to review the budget. The budget was nearly completed except for picnic information. Lou was to get that info to Charlie via the Internet. The trustees also worked on the 2015 calendar. Not all dates could be set until tides and flounder limits were known.

GACF: No report.

SUNSHINE: Discussion about Ollie Carlson in the hospital.

FEDERATION: The youth shoot is set for March 14 at Red Wing Sporting Clays. The Federation Dinner was held on February 14 at Kerry-Brooke. It was very well attended; the food was excellent, the 50/50 was around $1800.00.

NJ MARINE FISHERIES: There will be a meeting in Tuckerton on April 9 to discuss fluke limits and striped bass regulations.

WEBSITE/FACEBOOK: The installation dinner pictures have been posted to the website and Facebook.

TOURNAMENTS: The Perch and Striper tournaments are now on.

COMMUNICATIONS: No report.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: No new applications.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Joe Ricciardi and Paul Stonerod are looking into ordering club jackets on an individual basis. The cost would be about $40.00. President Van Daley felt the open tournament flyer should be fine-tuned to show where the weigh-in actually is.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be a fishing flea market at the Pomona Gun Club on April 18. There was discussion by Joe Ricciardi that we could put up an unattended table with our applications and some of our tournament flyers. For our meeting on April 27 at the Brigantine VFW we do not have a firm speaker yet but Joe Ricciardi feels he may be able to get the same speaker we had last year, speaking on a different topic. He was an excellent speaker with a very good slide presentation.

We need more flyers for the Nuncio Bruno kid’s bluefish tournament printed for that and our Open Tournament. Lou Schott said he would get it done.

John Glassie from Field of Dreams said he plans to place 15,000 American flags around the field. The flags represent all New Jersey service men and women who died in service. He will ask for donations to pay for the flags. President Van Daley recommended that a letter be sent to Dave Chandra, director of NJ Fish and Game, for his excellent rebuttal letter regarding use of the artificial reefs used by commercial fishermen. Ed Goldman said he would send Dave an email.
